Easiest solution's to use good glass like Leupold with long eye relief, which is preferable anyhow.
IMO theres nothing wrong with a Burris Fullfield 2 3-9x40 on a Savage rifle. i also cant afford to put a $600-900 scope on every rifle i own including ones like the Savage/Stevens.
the problem is the fact that the two-piece weaver mounts by Leupold/Warne offer only
one position for scope mounting. for some reason Savage drilled the front base mounting holes
way forward on the receiver... so when you mount the 2-piece weaver mounts they are at the far front and far back of the rather long Savage receiver. the front mount should have been further back, flush with the edge of the ejection port instead of nearly an inch ahead of it - this would have given you more room to move the scope back.
so while the 2-piece weaver mounts look cleaner and nicer on the rifle i recommend if someone is scoping these to get a 1-piece weaver rail instead, which will let you slide the scope further back.
based on your suggestion i have a couple of VX-IIIs that i briefly considered switching with the Burris to maybe give another half inch or so of eye relief but honestly id be loathe to put such an expensive scope on what i built as a 'beater' rifle.
They obviously handle internet orders differently than phone orders. If your going to call them anyway, its probably easier just to do the ordering over the phone. I think the longest I have waited for a gun to arrive was 6 days. It obviously took them a week and a half to process your internet order if thats when they billed your card. I'm guessing you got the gun about 5 or 6 days after the billing date?
yeah, exactly right. i called to ask if they had them in stock, then placed the order online. it took about a week and a half till my CC was billed, then i got the package about 5 business days afterwards.
my reasoning for placing the order online is that several orders ive phoned in at LeBarons have been screwed up. the people manning the phones at phone order companies like LeBarons arent very patient, it seems like they are trying to rush you off the phone. they dont even like it if you ask them to just read back the info youve given them to doublecheck it. ive gotten the wrong item a couple of times and had to go through the hassle of sending it back, waiting for a replacement, etc.
as we speak i am waiting for LeBarons to fix an error on their part. i ordered a scope from them, in November. they had their 10% off deal, PLUS the 7% off for club members. so i ordered a Club Card from them, as well as the scope, and asked them to be sure that they apply the 17% discount to the item (kindof #%@$ed up that you have to
remind them on the phone to apply their own promotions... like this month you have to tell them to apply the 20% or they wont apply it). of course when i got it i was billed full price, no LeBarons card in the box. so now i have to waste my time getting that rectified.
i HATE phone orders. its so much easier when you have your order, receipt, correspondence etc cut and dry in email form.
so yeah i figured that by placing it by email it wouold be just as fast. next time ill be sure to phone in my order at SIR
