Latest batch of Stevens 200 from SIR?

have you seen their prices on the Marlin leverguns?

Sorry, don't mean to hijack, but I did and checked other
rifle prices as well...WOW !! Could it be that SIR is actually adjusting their prices in response to the strength of the canadian dollar..if so about bloody time someone did ??

hey guys, sorry to ask this but... what's the difference between stagered and center?

Center feed is when the cartridge is stripped from the magazine in a centered position in the action, in line with the bore, if you know pistols think a single stack 1911's feed position. Staggered is when the cartridges are staggered to either side in the magazine in a double column magazine, and the cartridges feed alternately from either side of the magazine as they are cycled through the action, the AR/AK/most others use box semi auto magazines. Each works extremely well, most bolt actions, such as the Remington M700, the Winchester M70, Ruger M77, the Mauser 98, the Lee Enfield, etc etc use staggered magazine feed, it allows more cartridges to be held in a lower profile magazine. Some feel that center feed is better, myself included, but it is certainly no revolution and both do and will continue to work extremely well.

On the stevens short action calibers, do they actually use a short action or do they stuff the 243 into a long action with a magazine block? At $299 it is probably worth buying a couple of these.

its a Savage short action. although i should note that even though they are a short action, due to the spacing of the scope base holes on the receiver you dont get very much room for adjustment with the scope. so if you have a very short tube scope or one with short eye relief then get a 1-piece weaver/picatinny rail type base so you can mount the scope a little further back than you could with another style of base.

i posted a thread a while back on 'ordering and scoping the savage rifle' or whatever. has some pics - and that is the furthest back you can mount a scope like a burris fullfield II, a bushnell 3200 elite 10x mil dot, etc using typical 2-piece savage mounts.
the front scope ring is less than 1mm from the front objective. had i known that id have gotten a 1-piece rail, not the 2-piece weaver warne/leupold bases.

Easiest solution's to use good glass like Leupold with long eye relief, which is preferable anyhow.

I got both of mine yesterday.

.223 and .243 are both stagger feed.

The .223 has now got a Bushnell 3200 in burris QR rings for hunting.

The .243 is going to get its barrel ripped off and a .260 AI heavy tube tube installed eventually.

i generally place a web order and then phone to make sure its in stock.

it still wouldnt explain things like the nearly three week wait for my M44. they had something like 80 in stock when i placed my order. they sat on the order for almost a week and a half before they finally billed my CC and shipped it.

when i call in they just say that it takes them several days to start the transfer process.

They obviously handle internet orders differently than phone orders. If your going to call them anyway, its probably easier just to do the ordering over the phone. I think the longest I have waited for a gun to arrive was 6 days. It obviously took them a week and a half to process your internet order if thats when they billed your card. I'm guessing you got the gun about 5 or 6 days after the billing date?

IMO theres nothing wrong with a Burris Fullfield 2 3-9x40 on a Savage rifle. i also cant afford to put a $600-900 scope on every rifle i own including ones like the Savage/Stevens.

the problem is the fact that the two-piece weaver mounts by Leupold/Warne offer only one position for scope mounting. for some reason Savage drilled the front base mounting holes way forward on the receiver... so when you mount the 2-piece weaver mounts they are at the far front and far back of the rather long Savage receiver. the front mount should have been further back, flush with the edge of the ejection port instead of nearly an inch ahead of it - this would have given you more room to move the scope back.

so while the 2-piece weaver mounts look cleaner and nicer on the rifle i recommend if someone is scoping these to get a 1-piece weaver rail instead, which will let you slide the scope further back.

based on your suggestion i have a couple of VX-IIIs that i briefly considered switching with the Burris to maybe give another half inch or so of eye relief but honestly id be loathe to put such an expensive scope on what i built as a 'beater' rifle.

yeah, exactly right. i called to ask if they had them in stock, then placed the order online. it took about a week and a half till my CC was billed, then i got the package about 5 business days afterwards.

my reasoning for placing the order online is that several orders ive phoned in at LeBarons have been screwed up. the people manning the phones at phone order companies like LeBarons arent very patient, it seems like they are trying to rush you off the phone. they dont even like it if you ask them to just read back the info youve given them to doublecheck it. ive gotten the wrong item a couple of times and had to go through the hassle of sending it back, waiting for a replacement, etc.
as we speak i am waiting for LeBarons to fix an error on their part. i ordered a scope from them, in November. they had their 10% off deal, PLUS the 7% off for club members. so i ordered a Club Card from them, as well as the scope, and asked them to be sure that they apply the 17% discount to the item (kindof #%@$ed up that you have to remind them on the phone to apply their own promotions... like this month you have to tell them to apply the 20% or they wont apply it). of course when i got it i was billed full price, no LeBarons card in the box. so now i have to waste my time getting that rectified.
i HATE phone orders. its so much easier when you have your order, receipt, correspondence etc cut and dry in email form.

so yeah i figured that by placing it by email it wouold be just as fast. next time ill be sure to phone in my order at SIR :)

I just got my Steven 22-250 a few days ago and its a staggered feed. The gun feeds flawlessly and is a real tact driver. Smoked one coyote yesterday with it and am very happy with the purchase :D

Got my 200 in .223 today. :)

It is staggered feed, but seems to feed just fine (although the bolt is pretty clunky to operate).

Just need to figure out bases and rings, because like was said earlier the spacings of the holes are way out there.

try the 1-piece rail from brownells, $40 and their shipping is cheap (couple bucks). with luck it will come in a small envelope and customs wont even touch it.

search brownells.com for part #296-000-090
i dont own one of these so i cant vouch for their quality, but it looks about right and should allow you a lot more versatility with scope mounting than 2-piece mounts at a lighter weight than the steel warne/leupolds.

Careful though. Brownells lists the mounts for the flat top receiver (pre 2003). The new receivers use round tops.

Got my .223 today. It seems like they have a new stock for the 200, seems stiffers and a little darker to what I have had on my previous 243. I was planning on adding broken graphite rods in the front but I don't think it'll be necessary.

Played a little bit with trigger and got it down to about 3,5#, although I need to work more on overtravel.

Can't wait to take it shooting, a good cleaning and some G96 and the bolt is surprisingly smooth for a 300$ rifle!!

The mag is also stagered feed and feeds flawlessly.
