Crown assets has four really nice lathes for sale in Dartmouth NS. Anyone know how much it would cost to ship one to AB? :D

Between $1200-2000 to ship I'd day. I've got a couple contacts I've used before for shipping machines if you need.
I'll call someone in an hour to see about those lathes, pretty sure I know where they're from.

It would be good if you knew someone there who could inspect the machines for you as some gov't equipment has been rode hard and put away wet.

"All Goods are sold on an "as-is/where-is" basis." You'd have to go get it. They do give you 3 days to pay though
Not bad as they come with some tooling.

Five and a half HP and draws 21 amps at 240 v. That's a whole lot of lathe for a hobby shop. What is particularly nice is that at least the top one is equipped with a taper attachment.

Three phase is not an issue at all. I run 3p 600v in a couple of machines. if a lathe does not have a clutch so the motor spins free then you need to double the HP rating of the phase converter. Mine does not have a clutch and with a 5HP motor I use a 10HP converter.

My experience with the stuff Barer sold to the military has been that it was generally low grade excrement, at high grade quality equipment prices. There have been a few exceptions, that I have seen, but they were bought a long time ago...

Look at them and unless you have some better knowledge of why they are being dumped at this point in their life, then consider that there is likely a reason, usually that they are tired of fighting with the machines to keep them running and trying to get replacement parts.

No, I am not saying this because I want to chase folks off for my own purposes.

I shipped a 4000 pound milling machine from Bagotville to Cold Lake for right around $2K. Find a decent freight broker and talk with them. I used Riteway or Riteways, IIRC, out of Edmonton. Palletized loads are good, palletized, strapped and wrapped, even better. To get a decent estimate, you will want to know the cubic dimensions, as well as the weight.

This is pretty much the story I got as well.

This is the first time I ever heard of Barer, I wonder why they even bother to go with those in the first place when there's so many other/better options out there. Gov procurement I guess...

PWGSC is such a pain in the crunt to deal through, and so slow to pay, that we had a hell of a time getting suppliers to bid on our requirements.

PWGSC wants it all dumbed down and so non-specific that it gets bid on by junk dealers, because they have effectively prevented anyone from putting anything in the requirements that will exclude getting crap. Then the lowest bid gets the contract.
It took almost two years and IIRC 4 times through the Merx bids system with continued pruning and dumbing down of the specs and requirements, to get a milling machine delivered. The first of which looked like they had thrown it off the truck as they drove by laughing, and it's replacement, once installed, was such a royal PITA to use it was replaced with a well worn but functional, but equipped with intuitive controls, used machine salvaged from another unit's inventory.

Dunno if they returned the mill to Barer, or ditched it on Crown Assets, but I figure it was worth about a third of what they billed us, if even that.

There was a time, long past, when there were cells withing NDHQ that looked to buy the best equipment to meet the needs, and bought enough that they could push the machines out to the units as well as store a couple away in a Depot for later. Some bright soul decided that we did not need those folks any more, and their jobs were deleted.

Now the CF is stuck with the aftermath, which is a procurement system that requires it's users to be intimately familiar with the ins and outs of dealing with PWGSC, if they actually want to get something that is going to be of any use. Hard to find folks with those skills, while busily downsizing whole units out of existence whilst merrily blowing sunshine up the bosses arse about how they have all the people they need (now that they have reduced the manning numbers to match the paltry levels of manpower that they have ended up with).

Cheers

I run 2 CNC mills, a cnc lathe and a bridgeport at home with a 30hp converter, they all run at same time and the lights never go dim lol
