Hello,

Probably a stupid question... but here goes.

If I purchase a rifle in a gun store, what are the laws for walking out of the store with the gun into the public ? For example, what if my car is parked 5 blocks away?
Does the gun have to be out of public sight (in a bag so people outdoors on sidewalk and street don't know ?).
Does it have to have a trigger lock of some sort ?

I'm thinking of a scenerio where someone buys a gun but forgot to bring a trigger lock with them. Can they simply walk from the store to their vehicle with the rifle in plain sight ?

Thanks

Well never walk on the street anywhere with a firearm in plan sight, lock or no lock, and regardless of classification status. Not even in manufacturer packaging. This one should be obvious lol.

I really don't know why so many people are so paranoid that someone will see them with a gun. If you have taken the Canadian Firearms Course transport of a firearm should have been thoroughly covered. If you haven't taken the course yet then you have no PAL so it doesn't matter, you won't be walking out of any store with a gun. Basically there is no federal law or restriction of legally possessed firearms in public other than it must be unloaded. Don't point it, don't wave it around, don't be an idiot. Depending on where you live there may however be provincial or municipal statutes or bylaws that come into play here, it is your responsibility to be in compliance but any business that sells guns will have all the answers for you, they deal with this every day.

Carrying concealed weapon 90 (1) Every person commits an offence who carries a weapon, a prohibited device or any prohibited ammunition concealed, unless the person is authorized under the Firearms Act to carry it concealed.

Punishment (2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1) [carrying concealed weapon]
(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Sounds like a question a troll would ask. What's legal, isn't always the smart thing to do.

Agreed.

And, this should answer the question... If you can get arrested AT GUNPOINT in this country for being dressed up as a stormtrooper with a 'blaster', you better be careful... You can be right, but you can also be DEAD right...

It has been a few years since I bought a rifle at a store - my recollection, though, is walking out of the store carrying a cardboard box, with a rifle inside of it - I do not remember ever carrying a "naked" rifle out of a store - although we used to do so regularly when we were kids, walking out of town with our .22's to shoot gophers... I have also walked place to place with a rifle in a soft gun case, without any drama, as I recall.

Isn't this what they're trying to achieve? Making it so inconvenient to own a gun and use/transport it legally that people give up?
Pretty soon it'll still be legal to say something non-PC but they'll arrest you and make your life hell so you'll just shut your mouth.

Ask for the box.
Buy a cheap case
Buy a trigger lock if you’re worried
Park closer to the store

All those putzes driving hyper cars and getting pulled over by the Cops for doing nuffin...
Use common sense and dont be like "those guys" looking for trouble, especially those with cams rolling as they drive like idiots looking for attention.
Most stores will offer to wrap the pkg or ask it your parked close by etc...

True and well said. As an aside, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would be shot dead where I stand by the police if I were ever to just walk around with a gun. If you’re right, that’s the law.

I think it would depend on where you live.
:)

Depends where the store is. Few years ago I had an impulse purchase at my favourite shop in the Lake Huron area. I didn't bring a lock or case and was reminded that all needed was to take it to the car unloaded. Apparently people in the area were used to seeing guns and it was a Tiny town. Felt odd yet good at the same time. Nobody raised a stink, in fact nobody noticed. I got home and locked up.....done.
