laws of walking out of store with new gun

Did you do the safety course?. There is a whole section, storage, display and transportation of non restricted firearms. The leaflet given out also covers this information. We give them out to every student in our courses. As with most things a little common sense applied to the situation should see you through once you have the legal information to be in compliance.

It has been a few years since I bought a rifle at a store - my recollection, though, is walking out of the store carrying a cardboard box, with a rifle inside of it - I do not remember ever carrying a "naked" rifle out of a store - although we used to do so regularly when we were kids, walking out of town with our .22's to shoot gophers... I have also walked place to place with a rifle in a soft gun case, without any drama, as I recall.

Yes and we took our shotguns to high school and left them in the principals office and then hunted pheasants on the way home until 5:00 pm. But John Kennedy was still alive then.

Parking 5 blocks away, Not me anymore, Just a note, nowhere in the firearms act does it say you can't be a idiot, If it did , there would be a lot fewer gun owners.
Those cheap zipper cases are the handiest thing, sometimes plastic hard cases are just as cheap. You don't need a lock, But I think it is good insurance as a lot/ most police officers don't know what the laws are. Same with storage laws.

ive walked out of a gunshow with just the rifle in my hand, but this was in a quiet city and the gun show was at a rod and gun club with its own parking lot. pretty sure its legal but I wouldnt do it in a busy area like some of the businesses that people have listed in this thread.

You'll probably have a karen call the cops on you and thats just not worth the trouble even if the cops are understanding of the situation. Ask for a box, buy a gun sock, or just buy a gun case that you will probably need in the future anyways.

Isn't this what they're trying to achieve? Making it so inconvenient to own a gun and use/transport it legally that people give up?
Pretty soon it'll still be legal to say something non-PC but they'll arrest you and make your life hell so you'll just shut your mouth.

THIS has been my perspective as a kid who went through the school system in the 90's graduating in 02... So, the first time I brought a modern sporter home to test it out, she rode shotgun with no case. Don't worry, she had her seatbelt on.

You dont fix a broken, hyper-sensitive society by hiding anything they may deem questionable.

There's all kinds of examples of this too.

Do I NEED to own an AR15 ? well... Did Rosa Parks NEED to sit at the front of the bus? But I'd fight for both.
Did people think it was acceptable for ### men or women, to walk down the street holding hands 40 years ago ? No, but they kept doing it, and eventually, society came around.

Like it or not, if this sport is to continue it will need to build support and awareness across all of society.

This right here, props to The Shooting Edge, is brilliant for the future of the sport:

In a mall? It would be fun to walk around a mall with a newly purchased rifle. If you buy a used gun, there isn't even a manufacturers box to carry it around in.

When I was 13, I bought a used Remington 760 (30-06sprg) from a street front store. Walked to the car with it naked. Didn't even seem odd back then. That said, that street had 3 or 4 gun shops on it, so it was probably a fairly common occurrence.

Oh, yes, they call him the Streak

ftw!!!

I've walked out of a store several times in the past 10 years or so with a rifle not in a case or box, no issues. Somewhere in that time frame my brother and I had both bought old shotguns at the Kamloops gun show and walked through the sports fields with our new purchases to get to where we had parked, and the only comment was from an old guy about how someone was finally going to do something about the damn geese. I'd say it really depends where you live, but it's good for people to see a gun once in a while.

A few years ago in a small rural Ontario town a younger man was walking into town with a gun case. Somebody called the cops and the OPP locked down the schools and did a full sweep of the town. Apparently the kid was just out to go shoot some birds. A teacher at the elementary told me a tac'd out officer was seen the halls with an AR. Sensitive society yep.

You don't need a trigger lock for a non-restricted firearm.

That's true. You don't need a case, you don't need a secure locking device, and you don't need a sling, either.

You do need to ensure that you never: point a firearm at anyone, or; handle, transport, or store a firearm carelessly, or; create a disturbance, or; possess a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

TL;DR

I've carried a spare "gun sock" in case a non-restricted rifle tickled my fancy at a gun show and I wanted to cash and go...

It's necessary to monitor changes in gun control legislation. You never know what can be the trigger for police officers. I can say that there is a lot of strange laws concerning this field, I've read https://studymoose.com/gun-control with the content on it, and there is a lot of interesting thoughts. I think that our government must improve this part of the legislation. In any case, we can't make changes and should just follow the rules.

Bottom line, be half way intelligent about it and be prepared.

Bring or buy a case, bring or buy a trigger lock if you are so inclined.

Ask the store to wrap the box in brown paper...as if they were shipping it

Keep a blanket on your back seat....it's not rocket science

I really don't know why so many people are so paranoid that someone will see them with a gun. If you have taken the Canadian Firearms Course transport of a firearm should have been thoroughly covered. If you haven't taken the course yet then you have no PAL so it doesn't matter, you won't be walking out of any store with a gun. Basically there is no federal law or restriction of legally possessed firearms in public other than it must be unloaded. Don't point it, don't wave it around, don't be an idiot. Depending on where you live there may however be provincial or municipal statutes or bylaws that come into play here, it is your responsibility to be in compliance but any business that sells guns will have all the answers for you, they deal with this every day.

I haven't taken the course, and I have a PAL. I used to have an FAC, lol.

Hello,

Probably a stupid question... but here goes.

If I purchase a rifle in a gun store, what are the laws for walking out of the store with the gun into the public ? For example, what if my car is parked 5 blocks away?
Does the gun have to be out of public sight (in a bag so people outdoors on sidewalk and street don't know ?).
Does it have to have a trigger lock of some sort ?

I'm thinking of a scenerio where someone buys a gun but forgot to bring a trigger lock with them. Can they simply walk from the store to their vehicle with the rifle in plain sight ?

Thanks

Damn.... man.....
