Hey,
I just picked up a 1943 LB No 4 off the board here. Now its not my first No.4 but it is my first LB.

Just a few questions, now it is all matching bolt, reciever. magizine and forestock. There is no FTR stamp on it but it has quite a few Savage Parts, like the bands. Did savage send parts at that time in the war to LB?

Also when i removed the wood stock there is green paint under the wood all down the barrel and on the reciver under the wood, this is not a park but actual paint, is this original? what was the purpose?

All in all its in great shape with lots of C borad arrow marks, all over it, i will let you know how it shoots one i have it back to gether. It was loaded in cosomoline and I thinkits the originoal barrel as it rates between 5-7 outta ten.

any help here would be great,

regards,
gavin

1943 is early for Savage marked parts to appear on a Long Branch ...most likely not original. The green paint was additional protection applied for corrosion protection for rifles finding service in tropical environments. Generally appeared on mag and bolt.

After the Savage contract ended(06/22/44), all the existing rifles, parts and machines were sent to Longbranch. The rifles continued to be issued to the CF for years. Had one on my MIU when I commanded a CF Army Cadet Corps long ago.

Green paint? I've seen that on Jungle Carbines that went to Borneo and/or India.
Never seen it on a Long Branch.

Pics would be great...sounds interesting.

You're aware that if it was refurbed at Long Branch during the fifties, it'd be greenish parkerized? The whole action is the same though, not just under the wood.

Yes Im aware it would be a greenish park. I was looking out for that, but it is only under the wood, all around the barrel and on the action beneith the wood, ill get some pics up later this evening of the paint while i have the rifle in pieces,

cheers,
gavin

and the pics, comments please

no it does not have the ishy screw, kinda wierd eh, im in the process of contacting the previous owner to see where he got it from but judging by the dirt, grim and dried up cosmo under the stock i would say that it has been in storage a very long time.

Yup, looks like the real khaki paint, cool! Nice historical touch to that barrel. Don't remove the paint. Nice find,

Lou

Long Branch or CA did not mark rifles with FTR, so the fact it is not stamped on the rifle means nothing. It could very well have been refurbed post '44 with Savage parts. Judging from the pics its a pretty damn safe assumption it wasn't a de-sporterized rifle. I would vote for it being a legitimate part of the rifle's military history.

Yeah im really happy with it, i am not going to remove the paint for any reason, i was pretty sure it was legit. All the parts are LB or Savage, so if it was FTR'd then it was almost for sure done back here. It was never Bubb'd

I am very ahppy with this piece, not many have matching mags adn stocks to the bolt and reciever,
i should have it back together tomorrow sometime and get some pics then.

I would...wash the stock by hand with soap and water, inside and out. It'll be filthy.

When completely dry, give it a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil, leave sit for hours to soak in.

Then, wipe it down vigorously, creating heat and friction, repeat, repeat. Spend a couple of days...

Then put it together!

Cantom, i have a full proof methond for these old stocks that i picked up off a guy on the board here, currently it is in day 2 and tomorrow it should be ready for the BLO treatment, It will bring out all the markings and look good, I do not ever steam out any bumps or dents as i think it adds to the character of hte piece

Beauty...I love doing that to an Enfield, adds to their character and beauty, and takes away nothing but old, ugly dirt!

Del Selin, one of the paying advertisers on this board, has one posted on the EE. I've seen and handled the rifle and it fits his description. There is a pic in his ad.

He also says it was painted for servide in the eastern jungles, by the Brits.

Lb

I have a MKV trials rifle painted in such a manner. Your LB has seen service in Asia I would imagine. In 1943,LB was still finishing in a nice satin blue. Hard to tell from your pics, but yours appears to have been buffed/ground a bit. Also, rear sight is MKI milled version and likely not original to gun. Better pics would help.
Cheers
Geoff

I have the exact same paint on my 43 Longbranch. It also has a bunch of Savage parts.

Based on the stock, I'm guessing my rifle was in Pakistan at some point.

Alright here are the complete pics, i have had the gun done for a few weeks, At 50 yards wiht Iron sites it was shooting 2 inch groups free standing 1 inch right of hte bull, so im pretty happy with that.

All Savage parts have been changed with Long Branch, Checked out with armourers gages all in all a good one.
