Le Baron Bankrupt ???

I still get that warm and fuzzy feeling every time I pick up one of their new catalogues, we always found the Le Baron booth first at the Toronto sportsman show back in the 80's when you could still call it a show and you would get their catalogue inside a plastic shopping bag. Use that Le baron bag to shove all the info you would collect during the day. Couldn't wait to get home and look at he catalogue before bed when I was 10 years old.

I still stop in on my trips to Mississauga, I still find they have a good selection the membership card seems to be a good deal, no good for ammo sales.

One reason that I go to the big city now and then.
Stock is hit and miss but as Superbrad said, "They are the best store to walk into to browse and find something you didn't even know you were looking for at a ridiculously low price......"

Yes, LeBaron is closing. They didnt get refinancing on their continual rolling loans. So they're not bankrupt in the sense that the door will be padlocked any minute, but unless they have a miraculous turn around in fortune they'll be gone by the new year.

The story as I was told it by an old time employee is that LeBaron was owned by two brothers and one of them wanted to go in a new bolder direction but the other resisted. They ended up splitting and Sail is the completely independent result. Whatever, they started as a small little store in a rather crummy part of Montreal and have done pretty well for, you know, a basically Quebec based pair of companies. Sail is in fact so French here in Ottawa that they're often startled when someone speaks English to them.

Similar story line from the fellow who owns the building SAIL in Beloeuil leases. He in fact started the name SAIL as Surplus Armee Imrico Limitee, from a Hungarian named Imri. The line was the business was/is owned by two Montreal Jewish widows hated each other but knew how to do business. Their reputation as a business is stellar, with professional managers, solid finances and excellent supplier relations. They didn't get big by being stupid.

It is unfortunate. They may have succumbed to the "it's cheaper at Walmart" philosophy. The customer service may not have been the best lately but have you ever seen the service great at Walmart. I could only guess that it was at some point. They had the ability to "get what you need or want". This may be another example of the big box store taking over. Remember if you buy in Canada the money you spend stays in CANADA.

Went to the Markham store today. Except for having nothing but 1 specific type of slugs, nothing else I wanted was in stock. (Rest, AR 223 brush, 2 gun rifle case, range bag, 250 box of target shells)

While I wasnt a regular at the Markham store, I usually did make a couple trips to the store to buy flats of steel ammo since they usually had the best price. But inventory has been a problem with them in recent times. If Lebarons is really closing, I cant say that I'll be hard done by, but it still isnt a good thing when an outdoor store closes down in the community. Now with Bass Pro purchasing Cabelas, the market for hunting and fishing goods is being locked down by fewer retailers. That cant be a good thing for us hunters and fisherman in the long run.

This is still an unfounded rumour as far as I can see. And this right here is probably the origin of it: http://www.oodmag.com/community/showthread.php?87102-Lebaron-Ottawa-mass-restructuring-(i-e-closing)

Guy was told they're doing a mass restructuring and he made it into a closure/bankruptcy. Could be, may not be, maybe they are just fixing the roof in Ottawa.

Cabela's had a major staff recruitment drive here before opening, of course. If LeB is going under, I would have expected to see some of their staff working at Cabela's on their opening day, and I did not.

I used to work in the gun shop at the Mississauga location. I've just heard that it's slated to close, so there may be some substance to the rumour. It was handy to me and I never had any problems with them, but for a GTA location, I'd take Al Flahertys any day.
