Can anyone point me in the right direction here - I’m looking to try a few lead bullets in 357 but am looking for smaller packs like 100 bullets until I try a few and see which ones I like and dislike. Everywhere I look is selling them in 500 or 1000 packs.

Cactus is close to you, many shooters use them.

XMetal Targets sells a Hi-Tech coated bullet, and depending on your velocity goal, they may be your best bet. XMetal has discontinued some of their line, in particular the 147 gr bullet for the 38/357 that worked really well for me. A coated bullet isn't as fussy as a lubed cast bullet, works almost as well as a plated bullet.

A small amount is 500 to 1000 unfortunately.

Not sure why you are specifically looking for lead but you won’t find anything cheaper than Campro copper plated bullets.

Looking to load some very light “mouse farts” ideally a 158gr round nose.

I appreciate all the responses, especially cyclops.

Pretty much 99 % of the 158 gr cast slugs on offer commercially are RNFP for the cowboy crowd but RN are offered in lighter weights for 9 mill shooters (125-130 gr.-.356 dia as opposed to .358) but they work fine in so called "mouse fart loads". The wife has used them from time to time when no RNFP could be found to "keep her fed". I clean her guns (she cooks for me) for her and never seen any leading from the undersized slugs at that reduced pressures.

A lot of PPC shooters load very light loads behind a 148gr .38 Special lead wadcutter, so that might work for your light loads. The Cowboy (SASS) folk are generally around there too.

(Asking for .357 usually implies the big loud loads, and people generally turn to .38 first in the quest for something lighter that works in the same gun.)

After a surprisingly long delay I see that the new owner of the Bullet Barn has posted at http://www.thebulletbarn.com/ that he's up and running. And like you he is in Alberta. So potentially no shipping costs.

You didn't say what sort of gun you'll be using. I do some modern revolver shooting as well as cowboy action. If you are shooting a revolver and want light target loads you can't get much better than 148gn HBWC bullets pushed by 2.8gns of Bullseye. It's a classic load and shoots right on point of aim from my fixed sight S&W Model 10.

The downside with HBWC or even DEWC is that the nose of the bullet is flush with the mouth of the casing. So if you have something like a Henry or Rossi or Winchester clone rifle these won't work. Or if you want to shoot in any sort of competition where you reload on the clock then again the flat nose of the wad cutters ruins any chance of fast reloads. But for slow and steady pistol shooting they really do fly true over typical target shooting distances and are not a strong recoil at all.

For a rifle there's a 158gn bullet which is listed as LRNFP but which has quite a fat stubby nose. For an 1892 rifle clone this shape does not feed well at all. If you are plinking with a rifle I'd go with the 130gnLRNFP which is more pointy and feeds really well. It's also a decent enough bullet for use in a speed loader. Although if you're in an event where you're loading on the clock the targets are typically pretty close and you can get by with a slightly less accurate .356size 9mm round nose bullet so they find the cylinder openings a bit easier.

Another outfit making lead rounds currently is Rusty Wood. He's the main source for cast lead for the local cowboy action community.

Either way I'm pretty sure that if you want a sampler pack of 100 each that either one could help you out. It's not a normal sort of request but with an email to either explaining why you'd like to get such an assortment I'm sure they would be OK with it.

You could try praireprojectiles. google it .Kurt may be able to help you out. He is in Stettler so that might be a solution to keeping the shipping down if you want a bunch. I have seen him with sample packages on his table at the gun-shows.But there will be no shows for a while.

Thank you gentlemen for all the help. I will have to send out a few emails and see what’s what. The bullet barn has a few shown that I would like to try and I will likely start there.

Thanks again

Actually, DRG bullets are cheaper, and I find them way more accurate. I load both LSWC and LRN 158gr in 38/357. Cost me about $90.00/1000. Packaged in boxes of 500.

I buy cast lead .38 Spl 158 grain RNFP from Cactus Plains in Tompkins Saskatchewan at $80/ 1,000. This is the same price that he sells 1,000 .44's, .45 acp & .45LC for also. CamPro in .38 spl which I use on indoor ranges during the winter cost approx. $138.00/1,000 (if my memory serves me correctly) and .44 & .45 are about $80.00/500. Big difference.

I don't know if DRG ships out your way but the last 158 grain 357 bullets I saw a buddy buy from them well all I can say was they were near perfect.
