Leather covered SxS butt pad in progress

Steve, I don't know what your gloves cost but you can buy several square feet of veg-tanned 1.5 oz pigskin liner - used for lining leather bags, etc - for about $50 at Tandy. 1.5 oz. is 0.6mm thick. I would split one with you. I don't think chrome tanned leather is as durable and it does not wetform as well as veg-tan.
Or, stop in at Tundra Leather in Hamilton to see what what they might have and you might be able to buy a smaller sample pack rather than a whole skin as with Tandy. I bet your goatskin would work great but it needs to be sub-millimeter thickness in my limited experience.
I remember seeing remnants at Lens Mill store in Kitchener. I may have to have a look for some really thin stuff. Will report.

Londonshooter you’ve got 6 months to sharpen your game, I’m confidant we’ll be amazed at the Classic in June !
Yeah, see you at the Classic. When was that again?
I had put the pad out of my my mind for awhile but surreptitiously came into some deer hide and thought I would take another crack at it before retired guy busy season which is coming up.

What an awesome thread ! Some talent here !!
Never got into the leather wrapped stuff, as beautiful as it is, and looks so regal on some firearms.

I follow Rich Cole as well...he's a kool guy with a lot of knowledge about all aspects of firearms !

Been using a Miles Gilbert pad grinding jig for a long time. Scribed lines with chalk in them, careful grinding..Works great !

It;s going ok - just have to sort out the plugs at this stage. In general I have to improve my plug-making and boring the holes in the pad to accommodate them. And start with a better pad. And appropriate leather. The deerskin seemed to work ok. It dyed to a lot darker brown colour than I wanted.

CJO doesn't talk much about how he does them. Or does anything. Trade secrets and all that. I was just telling him earlier this week he needs to find an apprentice before he takes all his hard won know-how to the grave. But he sure does nice ones! I have one of his on one of my Diamond Quality Dalys and it is something!
Well….early on I was very forthcoming, not anymore.

Much of my leather pad stuff was posted on Doublegunshop 20 years ago, since then I’ve seen guys like Rich Cole make and use the same innovative tooling I posted back then…not with the same results I will say but good for him for paying attention, but I did take issue with Larry Potterfield for copiying it and selling it on his website…
Another guy, after watching me bend a stock almost burned his place down heating linseed oil on the kitchen stove.

I do talk about my craft but Im a lot more careful about what I say, I guess I’m not as forthcoming and naive as I used to be
The internet is full of wannabes and shisters (don’t mean you John) and since it has taken me a lifetime to perfect my craft I’m willing to let them spend just as long perfecting theirs

Surreptious deer hides and retired guy busy seasons, whatever are you up to John??!
