Leaving Alberta for Ontario

He ASSumes nothing about the moronic probationary periods.

And I ASSume he thinks crazy $225 is high too, I pay $65 for a famliy handgun/rifle/skeet/archery range.

There has been more than enough discussion on this site about the fees in Ont that nobody has to ASSume anything. Range fees are foolish high.

Um.... fees? Must be a Dalton "I never met a tax I didn't like" McGuinty thing. :stirthepot2: I shoot at the public range in Sibbald Flats in K-country. It's about 45 minutes from Calgary, and it's FREE. Not only that, you can pack a rod and reel and hit a trout stream on the way back. Oh well.

One more question.... are there any Conservatives out that way?

DONT DO IT!!!
unless that business opportunity is realy worth it

funny enough Im trying to convince my wife to move to Alberta, Im tired of driving great distances just to have fun in bush, and the traffick:eek:

well maybe she will settle for Berrie, that way Ill be half way already there

I lived in Ont for a couple of years before getting posted back here.

There is more to Ontario than metro Toronto, and the wildlife doesn't just stop at that Manitoba border. It takes two days to drive across the province, so there is lots of crown land. The moose and bear rival that of most provinces (especially in the Kenora, T-Bay area), and deer are plenitiful. It can be whatever you want it to be.

Ontario hunting

Droid
I'm form kitchener and I hate tell you but the hunting here sucks, you know up to 7 aditional deer tags and waterfowl every where, party hunting allowed etc... We somehow manage to shoot the odd deer even though we can only shoot shotguns and m/l. Just to cheer you up I'll post a pic of our 2007 deer season
deerhuntingnov2007031.jpg

The kitchener area also has around 8 gun clubs with in 15min drive with dues from $80 to $240/year. I don't think that you will hate it totally. Let me know when you get here and I can give you some info on the gun clubs.
Welcome and Good Luck

Nice season there Doubleman!

Do you own property close to Waterloo region or were those taken on properties you have permission on? I have permission on multiple properties an hour's drive away...but can't seem to get permission around here! Hopefully a few new contacts and some re-visits to property owners who asked me to 'come back next year' will work out for next season. Even though I primarily hunt during the archery season...it has been difficult getting permission here. I had an easier time getting permission just North of Toronto when I lived there.

I'm originally from the Parry Sound area. Moved to the GTA...not directly in Toronto, but the surrounding areas in 1984. Spent 13 years in Brampton, then started to jump around a bit anywhere from Burlington to Port Perry.
I can't say that I ever bothered to try and hunt in southern Ontario since I didn't know anyone down there with land. Up around the Parry Sound area (1/2 way up the Eastern shore of Georgian Bay)It's about 3 hours north of Toronto There's ok hunting, but nothing like your used to. I went out for deer this year west of Edmonton, and I couldn't believe the numbers. I wouldn't have believed that there were still places in this country that you could look into a field and see 80 or more deer staring at you. You won't see that in Ontario...at least not on crown land. The farther north you go, the better the hunting (in my opinion anyway). There aren't any moose south of Barrie (an hour north of Toronto)...yes....a moose was spotted in Barrie a couple of years ago :)
There aren't many deer north of Sudbury (from what I've been told). The nice thing about hunting in between is you can go to the same area and hunt either, although the seasons don't overlap.
You have to put in your name for a draw on doe tags in specfic WMU's. Your bought license is good for bucks only.
Your bought moose license is good for calves only. You put in for a draw for bulls and cows.
You need a license to hunt pretty much everything and pretty much everything has a season...not like here...but the "small game license" covers quite a bit.
I haven't hunted ducks in decades, so I can't remember if there is a special waterfoul ticket you need.
In order to buy licenses, you need the "Outdoors Card"...pretty much the same thing as a WIN card here.
Buy a boat. Once you're in Georgian Bay you can explore countless inlets and bays. Some places are pretty fished out, but you can still find lots of nice spots if you go exploring. One thing though. Georgian Bay sits on the Canadian Shield....lots of black granite.....somewhat hard to see bottom sometimes. Granite doesn't give. You rake your prop over it, your prop will lose everytime :) If you aren't familiar with an area or don't know where you are, GO SLOW :D The other thing to remember about the Great Lakes. The weather doesn't usually go from dead calm to 70mph winds in 10 minutes...but....when it does blow hard out on the water, it can get pretty hairy in a boat, and home can be an awfully long way away. It's not the ocean, but if you point the average boat at open water, you and drive for a couple of days in a straight line. I've been caught out twice when I honestly didn't think we were going to make it back. Anyway, I'm rambling on. You've got a lot of exploring to do. You'll enjoy that part. Just stay away from the Toronto traffic....it's a killer :) If you want to know anything specfic about areas north of Hwy 9, pm me, and I'll do what I can to answer your questions.

There's still lots of game and places to hunt and fish in Ontario (I could think of several lifetimes worth of Crown Land within 2 hrs of Toronto) and lots of other places. The problem rather lies in the fact that there aren't enough people with the values of Albertans and other rural Canadians living here (not that I can blame them for staying put out West!). If the general population had the same attitudes towards guns and hunting as the people in nearby states like Michigan, Wisconsin or etc, we'd probably end up managing the game populations, fish stocking programs, public access and controlling urban sprawl (which can be halted with fair but more restrictive immigration policies) in such a way that the opportunities would double. With the current trends in population, urbanization and stronger restrictions, alot fewer people are exposed to the outdoors and country sports than even fifteen or twenty years ago, making them more susceptable to the wackiest environmentalists, gun grabbers etc.

We've still got lots of deer, turkeys, bear, moose, waterfowl, grouse and woodcock, coyotes and other animals to shoot. It's just a matter of keeping it that way!

Dirty
All private land, we have permission for about 5500 acres.

Well you're very lucky!

I have 800 acres shored up just outside of Ingersoll and another 600 acres out Exeter way...but the gas money really adds up during the season!

Hoping to get closer to home...but at least I have a spot to go.

Oh by the way...The hunting sucks compared to hunting in Alberta. I Know, I lived here before lived there and now I live here...again...You get the idea?!?!

Our hunting sucks? Guess I've been deprived all my life having shot trophy class whitetail deer (up to 250#), ducks and partridge everytime we go out...geese anytime we want, and more coyotes than I can kill in a year. Moose is a little tough although I know guys who fill their tag every year. Bear hunting- even if it is only in the fall (azzwipe liberals) is only minutes away from home. Sounds like it really sucks to me!

bull#### friend.

The hunting is ####ing awesome in Ontario, just about anywhere you go. Lived here 28 years. Southern Ontario has out of this world deer hunting, so many deer down there that you can get more then one tag and they taste very good because they feed on the corn and soya bean fields!

Up where I live now has out of this world moose hunting, bear hunting, partridge hunting, rabbit hunting, fox, duck, deer. Even the odd cougar.

As I said, depends on where you go. But just about every where in the country in Ontario offers excellent hunting, even wild turkey "lots where I was born and raised"

Ontario varies in appearance where you go. The south has lots of flat farm land, where as the northeast looks like BC with much smaller mountains.

Good luck with your move ;)

Just to be clear, I LOVE ALBERTA.... that's not why I'm going. If I don't come back eventually to live, I'm gonna be buried here.

Thanks for the tips and advice guys. I've been looking at some online stuff re: the "Nearr North", Gowganda/Shining Tree, and Temagami, so I think I'll be tickety-boo as far as finding hunting grounds goes... but what do you guys do with all that freakin' water?!? LOL. Oh well, I guess I'll need a real nice expensive boat too. Wait 'til I tell the Missus.

Your moving near me ;) Let me tell you, you will LOVE the hunting and fishing here!

And I can contently say that WE have better fishing then you here ;) much much much more selection of fish to be had here then out west. And if your into fishing which I am sure you are. There is a lake here that is one of the few natural habitats for lake trout in the world. There is also a couple Aurora trout lakes here "rarest trout in the world" google it, BEAUTIFUL fish.

Not to mention the quiet, clean and fresh air. Oh man, your in for a treat.

To those arrogant people, you have no idea how beautiful Ontario is until you have come up the the northeastern part of it. Most of you think Ontario is nothing but a polluted, busy sess pool, well I got news for ya, your wrong in so many ways ;)

PS,
I would be happy to take you hunting in the 08 season if you have nobody to go with.

PPS,

I would stay away from Shining Tree. Things are expensive there, such as gas and the nearest grocery store is an hour drive. But it is pretty there!

What am I saying, it is pretty anywhere up here.

I left the southern part of Ontario to come move up here and haven't regretted it. The big ticket jobs here are logging, gold mines, geo work, diamond mines.

I wouldn't move back to where I grew up if you gave me a free house :D
;)
Good luck with the move man!

EDIT: Oh, you asked what do we do with all that water? wellllll.... we FISH it :) you will be totally blown away by the fishing here! People travel in from the states just for the bass tournament here. As I said, so so many different kinds of fish here!

One thing you will miss is your dry air out there. Humidity was at 93% yesterday, but is down to 60% today. -15 here "feels" colder than -25 in Fort Mac. It is -17 now and I am dreading having to go out and plow yesterdays snow! Pack your woolies, and get ready to sweat in the summer!

I have been trying to stick it out until the crash hits and all the retards go home. Sadly they will probably stick around and steal from me for income. If you see a new member named Republic of Yukon you will know who it is.

You might find yourself awfully lonely if all the "retards" go home, chances are you would loose your parents or grandparents at least! Would like to see you call some of my Ironworker, and Millwright friends retards to their face, while they are out there saving your pathetic arses!
