I am an Enfield virgin, I just picked one up and need to pick some brains with info. It is a NO4 MK1 ROF (F) 8 /45 serial FC244xxA, on the butt there is s ZF, Mk 3 sight, very tip of barrel marked as NP 303 22" and another marking under that says 18 1/2 " It seems to be covered in some black waxy substance that does come off with cleaner and from what I can tell some cosmo. Had to use cleaner to get at the model number. From what it looks like ,the bolt and the reciever have the same serial number. The serial number is on the ring that goes around the butt stock. Barrel is very good and the bolt face looks good also. From what I can tell. it was cleaned but not very well due to the black waxy buildup on the metal, it has not seen very many rounds through it.

Any info on it would be appreciated and also how to get the cosmo off the wood without damaging the markings? (Murphy's oil soap?)I would like to take it out this weekend and fire it to check the functioning. Man I love a new gun, even if it's old

Thanks

Here's a basic Enfield marking site to bookmark for the future.... :)

From what you describe, it sounds like a basic British Enfield No.4 Mk1, that was (most likely FTR'd) at the Royal Ordnance Facility (Fazakerley, Lancashire) in August of 1954. The markings on the barrel indicate she was put out to pasture (for civilian sale) and tested to ensure safety when they did it. The "ZF" on the butt was put there by an amourer and it means "Beyond Local Repair", except at factory, however, the repairs may have been made and the "ZF" missed being struck out..... ;)

it amy be that the black waxy stuff is the sunkorite coating. if it is don't remove it. Thats the proper finish

It was cosmo and some black grease,it just came off with nothing on the rag, no cleaner or anything. The Suncorite is still present on the barrel and the front sight assy as well as the reciever area. The black stuff even came off with your finger. Some of the finish was taken off to get the serial number and model number though ,prior to me getting the rifle. Is there a decent method to coat the areas again and with what?
