Ok, I see it now.
I'm going to hazard a guess but I think I can see a "U" just forward of those letters as well in the second last picture of page 3 ? For some reason, the word "Sully" comes to mind but I'm not quite sure as I don't specialize in Enfields.
I joined the Royal Signals (National Service 2 years) in 1954, yes that is a real date, not a phone number!
Was issued a Mark 4? Lee Enfield, made in Canada. Bran New, never cleaned the goo off it, Cosmoline? Went and found the armory, and with the help of the armorer, cleaned it up... It was gorgeous!
Not sure, but I think it was made in 1947? The first time I fired it, 50yds. The corporal, said, you load it like this, you lie down, and shoot it like this? Five minute lesson. I had never fired anything but .22 rifle before, but soon got used to it, the sights were dead on, other than a kick in the boot "Slow down" that was my lesson. The stock was a rich mahogany finish (stain?) I think it followed me about in Catterick (Yorkshire) but after the 6 month wireless Operator Training, did not see it again. And then stationed in Germany.
I am sure I am in the wrong section here? If so sorry.
