If you go to YouTube, and search for "Bubba Rountree Slugs" you will get a few videos from a guy that is an expert in loading Lee and Lyman Slugs, as well as buckshot loads. I use 12S3 Wads (pink color). Lee 1 oz slug fits in perfect. You must put a shot card (or two) under the slug, where it fits into the shot cup. If you don't the wad will deform when fired, and accuracy will be compromised. You may want to put couple of shot cards on top of slug as well to snug it up when crimping. I cut these myself with a 16 mm punch. I use Longshot Powder 26.7 grains. Cheddite 209 primers, and Federal Straight Walled Hulls (free at trap range). I've never used wheel weights, other than for buckshot. Slugs should be pure lead.

I have made slugs from shot, ww and pure lead. No problems through 590A1, 870 and Hatsan with out chokes.

The hole punches , at least larger than 1/2 in may not fit into the chuck of the drill press ( I know 5/8 dia. is the biggest I can get in mine) ,but you can still hammer punch the wads. I like to put a block of wood in the vice with the end grain up and cut into that it seems to be easier on the punch.

The end grain idea is very sound. I use a 6 inch long 4 inch in diameter piece of log and set in on the cement floor. That way there is no bounce and the punch cuts very easily. Next time I will try the drill press if my punch will fit in the chuck.

I have a bunch of winchester A wads but found with the lee 1oz slug it would sit down too far and can't find shot cards anywhere. I just picked up the clay buster 7/8 wad (cb0178-12) and I seat that and the crimp folded nice. I also trimmed the petals half off. Haven't shot any yet. Any opinions on doing it this way?

Hey Bryan...I'll round a few photos of my set up. The idea is for the slug to open up the crimp and not the wad.

Well I grabbed a 10 pc hollow punch set from Princess Auto for $20 and the 5/8" punch makes cards that seem to fit WAASL wads good. These wads in AA hulls are a good snug fit with a Lee 1 ounce slug. I haven't done very much testing at all but with a max load of red dot they chrono'd at 1050 fps from a 14" 590A1. Load data suggests 1300 fps so I'm hoping to get 1200+ out of an 18.5". I wish I could find the articles done by a guy who did a fair amount of penetration testing with handloaded slugs, but the Lee was one of the deepest penetrators thanks to its structural integrity not allowing expansion or deformation. They were in Brenneke territory as far as penetration goes.

Yomomma, nice setup. I did the same with the Grey clay buster 7/8 wad cutting the petals to about the same height as you seem to be doing. Wish I could get some free time to try shooting them. What wad is that you're using in that photo?

Of those win AA wads I have I loaded up a couple shells using some cards I punched with a hollow punch but they seemed to bulge even worse than the clay buster wad. Man, 30 years of metallic reloading under my belt and 5 presses and try this shotgun thing and I feel like a noon again. Haha

I use the Claybuster #CB1100-12 wad (1 oz, pink) and don't need a card filler wad to get a good crimp with AA cases. Same charge of 700X powder for my 1 oz trap loads gives approx 1200 fps. Nice light practice load. I use 800X when I want a little more velocity.
To get a cleaner wad separation I have been using a hot glue gun to fill the cavities in the base of the Lee slug. Found that info on line years ago. Works well.
If you can spend more money - I'd seriously recommend the big Lyman flat nose slug (1.2 oz). In my 870 and rifled barrel it is far more accurate. I do not use the Lee slug for hunting. The Lyman is far superior in that respect. (Also fill the base with hot glue) Recoil in a 3" 12 ga WW case with a heap of Blue Dot is remarkable. Flattens deer too.

I hear you. Had my press for about twelve years and never touched it. Casting has sure opened a few doors. I use clay buster lightening wads. Just picked up another bag and one more of the CB windjammer wads.

You can always come out with me Saturday mornings ;)
