Legal Scenario for ya.

After calling DNR about an issue I had a few years back I will NEVER voluntarily call them again. They completely lack common sense or the ability to look at the big picture. Someone had set up an illegal trapping operation on my property ( coyote snares ) which they had illegally baited with deer . My dogs had gotten caught in the snares TWICE. One of the set up's was less then 30 meters from my camp...BUT off of my property. DNR gave me trouble for removing the snars..AND since one the deer was not on my property they would NOT remove it.....since my dogs kept trying to get at the deer I asked If I could remove it and they said NO....it would be against regulations for me to touch the deer??

In short they made ME feel I had done something wrong for removing the set up on my land and their refusal to remove the deer carcass was strange to me.

The best part is that my dog was trapped late afternoon an a Saturday....they told my wife to deal with it...and that since it was late...and since they have to get overtime to work Sunday...they will be out Monday to have a look??

Call the DNR at your own risk...they are pretty much useless around here and they seem to be more interested in finding fault with your sitiuation then helping you out

In this case, you shot the deer, you tag the deer...its pretty simple. Just because you weren't able to track it until the morning doesnt mean you havn't shot your quota for the year.

I know the MNR has re-issued tags for animals that are shot and are deemed not fit for human consumption. (ie: Already wounded and infected from another hunter or animal, or tranquilizers were used when placing an ear tag or collar)

Tag your deer, call the MNR and see if they can issue another tag...pretty simple.

Wow..Good question
You have both sides answered here
Bottom line is, it is up to you as the hunter, know one is going to know but you.
We hunt on a honour system, do the right thing in your mind.
I know what I'd do and I'll keep that to myself

New member & my My first post!:)
Tag the deer it is the right thing to do!:)
Here is Another scenario.
You are duck hunting you have shot & retrieved four ducks! You have winged another four & lost them! Do you carry on shooting until you have your bag of eight, winging & loosing another ten, or call it a day?

I think we all know what the ethical thing to do is!;)

You keep shooting and blame the wounded ones on steel shot, and as someone who likes wild meat I want to open my deepfreeze after the season and see the legal limit of ducks, as I have found the ones that got away wont fill you up and they dont taste that good.

Well, I would tag it, and call the CO to attend the scene. The CO has the descretion to issue you a new tag, same as if it was previously wounded and rotting. It doesn't hurt to assume the CO is there to help ethical hunters as much as to punish poachers and idiots.

I wouldn't have taken the shot. :nest:

I'm too old to be chasing a wounded one aroubnd in the dark. It reminds me of this old poem.

Standing on the hill an old and young bull

Eying a view that is more than joyful.

Below, in the meadow, oh what a sight,

A herd of cows stand… passions to ignite…

The young bull - hot-blooded - itching to go,

Cries out loud: “Wow, wow and yet again wow!

Each one of them is just like a ripe peach,

Let’s dash down quickly and let’s grab one each!”

The old bull stands his ground, majestic, cool,

Looks at the young one: “What impetuous fool!”

Head down, teeth to grass, he takes a mouthful,

And scornfully addresses the young bull:

“Slow down my young friend; don’t give me B. S.

We walk down slow, calmly, with cool finesse.

We are bulls with balls; let’s fulfil our call,

Slowly, one by one we shall take them all.”

Im also glad to see there are some Like minded ethical hunters about!:)Its up to us to teach the young hunters!:) Its about doing the right thing!

Shoot one deer & leave three wounded to die in the bush!
Shoot My 8 ducks & leave ten floating!
That kind of mentality Gives all us a bad reputation!

If you shoot and kill the deer are you not bound to field dressing and taking the deer home with you regardless if the animals got to it? I personally know someone that shot and wounded a deer that later wandered into a bog. The deer was so far out that they could not put a tag on it and most of it had sunk, they spent the whole day trying to get it out. Afterwords, they contacted MNR and were told that if they did not put the tag on it they would be charged for poaching and if they did not remove the deer they would be charged for allowing the deer to spoil. Needless to say they ended up getting it out after two solid days.

Can't be my deer, the one I shot at was standing up.:D

These *ethics* threads are sure getting creative......;)

It,s not so much an "ETICS THREAD" as it is a legal thread with a bit of a twist.

As we know "LAWS ARE LAWS". Just some laws get passed over because of convenience, or lack of education(not knowing it's law). There are so many hunters quick to point out someone elses wrongs, who conveniently pass over laws that don't suit them. You see it all the time. You can easily see this by who chime in on "what" thread.

Just some
Leaving fish ducks( mergansers).
Streatching legal shooting times.
Fishing with legal limit of lines, and jigging with an extra.
High grading fish(Full limit in livewell still fishing, and throwing the smaller ones back)

This is the last comment on the subject for me,your previous post never said anything about leaving floaters it stated the ducks were lost.

Brought this scenario up to a bunch of friends over the bast few days. None said they would cancel their tag, until I told them it was indeed a law. Only two then said they would cut their tag. The others said stuff like some of the others on here. Who's to say it's the same deer. What if the wolve killed it before the wound. And the big one ''WHO WOULD KNOW ANY DIFFERENT''.

All these guys a known to me as lawful hunters for the most part. This is just one of those laws that even have any of them on the fence.

You've said a few times its the LAW. Can you provide a reference to the F&W Act where it says so?

If you want to be "ethical" as some would like, then you should just punch your tag and toss it after shooting and losing a deer because 9.5 out of 10 chances, the Yotes will make a meal out of it. Or here's one, don't shoot it unless you you can retrieve it in legal daylight. Let your empty freezer be your guide.
