Lethality of the 22 LR standard velocity round

That should be stickied somewhere here. I hadn't read it before and that is quite surprising to see. Granted, he did have a serious tailwind, but still amazing.

I remember reading a bunch of coroner's reports out of Atlanta, Georgia (I was bored). Apparently .22 is rather popular for suicides and can do some decent damage to a target with proper shot placement. It's no manstopper but it certainly can be lethal.

Good article there, I like reading about "experiments" like that. =P

I've killed dogs, cats, rabbits, ducks, sheep, pigs, halibut, cows and probably a few things I've forgotten about with a .22LR

Don't underestimate it's lethality.

My .22mag has MUCH more explosive force when loaded with JHP's, as opposed to my 9mm Storm with FMJ's. I shot my one and only partridge last year with the .22, lets say there wasn't much left to bring home.

I don't doubt the rimfire stuff at all, I *am* a bit surprised it did so well with the three layers of clothing.

I knew a guy who used to hunt feral goats and used a .22 magnum exclusively-neck/head shots ,he kept the range within 50 or 60 yards.

Todbartell's mom killed a grizzly bear with a .22...

There are many cases of bears being killed with a .22, in fact a book that was given to me by my great grandfather was about a Game Warden/Conservation Officer in either Jasper or Banff that used a .22 when killing problem bears when found in a community as a "safety precaution". Sadly the book was ruined in a flood otherwise I'd scan the page.

I also have an "Old West" magazine which featured a story about killing a Grizzly with a .22, I can scan this of people require.

Also during the depression my grandfather had to feed his family (he was the middle child) by hunting deer and the only thing that they had was a simple .22LR, he would go for headshots or nothing. I think this helped him become a really good shot because he was one of the best I've ever seen to date.
