Lets get a some lever action #### going

Nice 94, Matt. The first 23 inch barrel produced! That is something.

Thanks Mike. Yes, a neat rifle, one of only six in the records and the first one. I wonder how many of those other five are still out there. I do know of one of them, but that is it. Very rare to find odd length barrels on the 94s, or any models for that matter. I really like the configuration of the rifle too, and the sight combination. Makes a handy little deer rifle.

Matt, that 23" barrel is a keeper. You may not get your hands on another one in 50 years of searching. I'm going to have to take some more photos of my 'new' 38-55 but this time wipe off the excess Conservator's Wax.

You are right Kirk. I do know of one other documented 23" short rifle that is also noted in the factory ledgers. It sold at one of the large US auction houses a couple years ago. So, that is 2 of 6 noted in the ledgers that are known. A few more outside the letterable range could also have been manufactured later, but if so, that number would be extremely small. To that, how many of these other four identified in the ledgers have survived, that is did not get destroyed, parted out, etc. Could be that these two are the only 2 left out there of these six. I do know of one that falls way outside of the letterable range of these guns, but it is restored and not verified as factory correct. Indeed, very rare rifle.
Yes, be interested on hearing your thoughts later on the Conservator's Wax after that short video that was sent to us earlier this week.

Here is a couple of rifles I carved new stocks for this winter as it was long and cold up here. The walnut blank started as a 36x10x2" board from Windsor plywood. First rifle is a Win 94AE Trapper 30-30 with button mag tube and a vx2 3-9x33 ultralight, the lever is a Cody large loop. The buttplate is from a 1942 British 303, it has the trapdoor and will accomadate 7 rounds in the rear stock. Second one is a friends Win 94 30-30 bush gun from the 1970's with a Williams FP.

Silvertip13, that is excellent craftsmanship! I love working with wood, but I'm afraid I do not have the kind of skill that could produce beautiful stocks like that.

I ran into this at one of the local shops the other day. 1940 dated Winchester 71
I was pretty ticked off to see it had the factory bolt peep, cause that meant that I had to buy it.

So you just waltz into the LGS and find a bolt peep 71 !! What a score, I wouldn't have left without it !!

Not quite. I was told it was there, by an old timer here in Sudbury that buys and sells a lot of guns, and saw it there, but shies away from this sort of thing. Luckily for me, it was still there when I went in, and still luckier, the store had no idea of it's value. It is completely undicked with.

Last week I received the latest addition to my very small collection of vintage Winchesters.

The factory records indicate the following:

Serial number applied on March 24, 1905
Type: Rifle
Caliber: 38/55
Barrel Type: Round
Trigger: Plain
Shotgun Butt, Rubber plate
4 cartridge magazine
Received in warehouse on July 10, 1905
Shipped from warehouse on July 10, 1905, Order number 15546

The Marbles tang sight is a high condition original that I installed myself (with great care, using the proper hollow ground screwdrivers). Again, with much loving care, I took it to the range and put 14 rounds into 2 & /12" at 100 yards with cast bullets (which are not properly sized to the bore, but it is all I had at the time).

Very nice Kirk, looking forward to seeing her beside a nice buck this fall.

Well, I have not posted one here in awhile, so may as well add to the viewing pleasure.

Here is a rifle I recently picked up. A Winchester Model 1894 in the old standby 30WCF. This gun is antique in the US as it had its serial number applied on September 17, 1897. This special order rifle was shipped out to the proud owner on October 1, 1897. This rifle was special ordered with a 2/3 magazine, plain pistol grip stock with steel shotgun buttplate, a Lyman No. 4 Hunting front sight, Lyman tang sight, and a Marbles fold down No. 95. Pretty scarce gun on its own with those features. Now, for the best part. What makes this gun super special, is that it is 1 of only 6 documented 23 inch short rifles noted in the Cody Museum records for the Model 1894. Yes, a 23 inch barrel! Standard length for this model was 26 inches. Once in a while you see a 24", a 22 or 20". Not too often you will see this. And, it gets better. This is noted - by serial number - in the published 1995 Armax study of the 1894 records at Cody, as the very first 23 inch 1894 manufactured by Winchester. Pretty cool. From my understanding, the gun was originally carried and hunted with in Upper New York State, that was where she earned her dues. This gun is also noted and photographed in the article "Winchester Model 1894 Sight 1894 - 1899" in the Winchester Collector Winter 2014 issue. That article was written by Brad Dunbar who is conducting research on the special order sights that could have been ordered and found on the Winchester Model 1894.
Here are a couple photos of the rifle:

Nice to see a gun like that up here in Canada.

Whew! Am I ever glad you snagged that before I walked into that Sudbury store! I would have caved right there on the spot and then I'd be in deep trouble when the credit card bill showed up. What a gorgeous rifle!!!

X2! And, excellent photo TJSudbury. Makes me want to get out and hunt!

Thanks Roadking. Yes, you don't see many special ones like that up here in Canada.

Wow, if I had walked into that store, I would have folded like a cheap lawn chair and bought that too. Congrats on a fine 71.
