Let's see some pic's of your SxS's & O/U's

In honour of my most recent acquisition appearing in the latest (Jan/Feb 2012) issue of Shooting Sportsman magazine I thought I'd post a few pics.

Of course, I had nothing to do with the gun finding it's way into the magazine. That is courtesy of the previous owner. Thanks Mark. It looks great.

It is a Manufrance Ideal circa 1920. 12 gauge, 291/4 inch barrels. Working retractable sling. Mark's research suggests it is probably a grade six or seven with some custom aspects to it.

I'm having the wood refinished, checkering re-cut and the barrels re-blued. Can't wait to see how that wood turns out.

WOW James that's a beauty. Nice pic's too. Looking forward to some "after" pic's as well.

Happy Holidays everyone.

Scott, wish I could take credit for the photos but they are the excellent work of another member here, Mark Dube. I was thinking yesterday when I was posting that Mark has a really good eye for what I want to see in gun photos. I had about 20 to choose from, just about all were very good shots.

And thanks for the words of encouragement nine pointer. I know on this site and others there are many who think differently but I know what I like. I just try hard to make sure it is done as well as can be done. Sort of, if you're gonna mess with it, do it right.

BTW, just to stir up a conversation....given that I am getting the barrels and wood redone what do you think about going the whole way and having it re case hardened.

I initially decided not to because I felt it would detract (by making it less visible) from the fantastic engraving. Any thoughts?

Also any thoughts on recoil pad, style color etc? I've never been a fan of that red/orange color no matter how "correct" it may be.

WOW that may be the most elegant shotgun I have ever seen a photo of! What a rare piece of functional art. Congratulations on acquiring it! Re-doing the case hardening would not make it look better to my eyes, but it would fit in with the otherwise full restoration job. I do suggest a new recoil pad in the original style. I hope you cherish it and take it hunting behind a good bird dog.

Restoring a proper CCH finish will be costly. Beware the evil of the torch! I think it looks great now. Until you mentioned it I wouldn't have even considered touching the receiver.

I think if I was having someone reblue and refinish the wood including recutting the checkering, I would have the case recolored as well. I think after the gun is refinished, anyone who wants to admire it will be having a close look and I think they will have no problem noticing the engraving. In fact, I think many would be wondering why you didn't go all the way after redoing the barrels and wood etc. Of course this is just my opinion as it realy becomes a personal choice and not what others might think. That being said, I would keep the buttplate or recoil pad original if possible.

Ninepointer, thanks for the advice. I have had several done in the past and am well familiar with the potential pitfalls. I definitely won't be using "old Ed Landers" (inside joke for those on Doublegun BB). If you search this thread you can see a few I have had done already including a high grade Pieper and a 1910 Fox A grade. I have tried to find the best craftsmen in Canada to do the work on my guns and feel like while there may be some that can do as good a job, not likely any are doing it better.

Guns, I think you may have a point about those wanting to look, having a close look, myself included. I think I will get the work described done, get the gun back and have a good look (and think) at it. When I originally left it with the smith we had a long discussion about whether the receiver would look out of place with the rest of the gun completely renewed. We shall see.

Longwalker and Gunsaholic, really? Do I have to go for original recoil pad?

And Longwalker, I have a Llewellin setter (my fourth!) and she and this gun will definitely go hunting. Nice sunny days in SW Sask looking for sharpies and huns. I just hope it's all done by the time the next season rolls around. The previous owner says it shoots low so I will have to spend time at the range getting used to it.

Merry Christmas to all and especially my fellow SxS nutz. Have a great 2012 and may fortune smile on you.

Is he still at it, trying over there to justify his ways?

Although I shoot SxS's, I'm a mere fan of the fine old doubles rather than an actual player. Nevertheless, I have had some classics, in their field grade configurations, follow me home ;).

Of course you do.:D Especially if you do have the case colors redone. Okay, find a recoil pad that might be better looking or better for shooting but have an original replacement on hand to go with the gun. How's that for a compromise?
That's another thing I was thinking when I said you should have the colors redone, that being that it might look out of place with the rest of the gun. Even if it doesn't look out of place, there will be those that wonder why you didn't bring it all the way back to its original glory. But as you said, see what it looks like. No pressure here, oh did I say no pressure here!!
Kind of hope you do it cause I already phoned ole Ed and said you would be sending him a receiver. d:h:

For a bang up job on case color renewal -- Oskar Cobb in NS is very reasonable and does a great job -- I think he only charges under $200.00 for a receiver and acessories.

I have spoken to Oskar and intend to try him at some time but if I go ahead with CCH on this gun it will be with someone whose work I am familiar with. But that you for the reference.

Fresh from the post office. Nothing fancy, but 3" chamber and steelproof and I am sold! Looking forward to taking some teals and mallards in the river next season, too bad I bought this with 2 days left in this one and won't have a chance to take a duck with it sooner.

How are the triggers on that Bobwhite?

Among the various Bobwhites that I have owned so far, the 12ga specimen that I had picked up in 2006 was the best finished shotgun with beautiful wood....regrettably, I sold that since my personal hunting needs are addressed with a sub gauge.
