The foreend isnt a small piece.. think of MOE carbine length with an inch or two on each side, plus it has hand stops on both ends =D

I got my Magpul 870 forend today, too. Had it pre-ordered from Brownells, they just got them. I had a heatshield on my 870. It won't fit over the Magpul forend so I took it off... that forend is tall enough that my fingers won't touch the barrel so it's alright.

Are the slots along the forend for mounting rails? Or just cosmetic?

The MOE slots are fully compatible with the MOE rails. you can mount at 6 10 or 2 clock

Dlask 870 Shorty. I've wanted one of these for years. Big Fan. Added:

-Mesa Tactical side saddle/rail combo, attached some old iron sights.
-Added the Knoxx Power Pack saddle and high cheek rest to the Knoxx Recoil Reduction stock it came with. It wiggled a lot with the regular knoxx stock at the range and dinged me in the cheek a few times. This tightened it up a bit and helps with the higher sights.
-Dlask Arms Shorty Tactical Aluminum Forearm, attached cheapo flashlight and Tapco stubby grip (original lanyard was cut off and I like my fingers)

It's my only shotgun other than my Bond Arms .410 derringer. I'm liking the shotguns a lot though. I'm thinking a tactical 870 express is next.
