I have always loved these rifles in original condition. I finally got my hands on the one I wanted and have a few more in the works over the next while. I bought this one from a well known and respected CGN member, just took some convincing that he wanted to part with it.

Here is my all original 1958 Winchester 70 in 300H&H:

I recently had my paws on two pre war model 70's, one in 300H&H and one in .270. I have a feeling some serious money might be needed to pry them from the owners hands though :(

Picked up a 1956 300 H&H this past fall still in original cofiguration, it is hard to find them with their original steel butplates, I see yours has the optional plastic but, or has yours been altered? great shape your gun is in, mine shoots 1/2" groups with factory win super X ammo that came with the gun! I have offered it to a good friend as I think he would use it more than myself. What I really would like would be a bull gun in this calibre, if there is one out there please PM me here or email dzywina@yahoo.ca. I hope you shoot the hell out of that nice classic rifle and have fun doing it! Another friend has one that was sent to Weatherby back in the 50's and was converted to 300 Weatherby by the orginal shop and has the markings on the original barrell to prove it, I tryed prying it out of the fellows hands, but he usses it regularly for long shots at moose in the large cutovers here in the north. Maybe one day I will get it, take care of that nice rifle , Dale in Canada:)

Thats a beautiful rifle Dave. A pal of mine has one as well, but its had a hard life compared to yours, and the wood is a pale color whereas I prefer dark wood. Are you going to put rubber on the butt, or tough it out for love of authenticity? Paul's rifle must be a few years younger as his has what appears to be a factory recoil pad. I consider the .300 H&H the best of the .300 magnums.

Mine is all original, the plate too. 1958 was the transition year between steel and plastic. It will remain as it sits, no alterations at all. Maybe some correct period rings but that's it.

I had really hoped for one in this condition with the steel butt plate, but at the time that little feature would have cost me a pile more to get one from 57 in about the same condition and I would have had to pull it from the states.

I have some connections on a few others, but they might take some time...

What you guys can't afford new guns.

Ha, ya right! The one posted cost me far more than most of my new rifles :(. The goin rate for "all original" 70's in good condition is high. Ones that have been messed with go for very reasonable prices. Refinish the stock or put a recoil pad on them and the price drops significantly.

Certain cartridges offerings fetch far more than others as well.

Glad to see you finally found one Dave. My 1954 .300 went to "Bill" in Alberta a couple years ago. Was a tack-driver and hard to improve on but the money went to other worthy toys. Now you need a copy of "The Rifleman's Rifle".

Nobody has any nice old 70's they want to share with the rest of us :(

Not compared to that!

That is a nice rifle Dave. Unfortunately the Pre 64 is something that I don't have being a lefty and all. I will start to look for a Pre 64 fwt 270 for my son someday. But he just turned 6 on Tuesday and I'm still trying to decide which of his eyes is the dominant one.:D

I sold it for a good price to a friend who will keep it in one piece.

Don't be trying to influence him now ;) :D. Although it would be a lot cheaper for you if he was a lefty, but then you might be fighting over rifles all the time

I don't know if it's cheaper or not. I hope he ends up righty. That way I don't have to lend him mine and I can feast from the right handed banquet of rifles through him. Hmmm. Maybe it will get expensive!:D

I have a Pre'64 here...a 1959 Fwt in 30-06,...mounted a 2.5-8X Leupold on it last fall....didn't feel like loading for it so I picked up a few boxes of factory ammo and went to the range....the best one was a Federal Premium 165 TSX...carried it a bit but never got a shot at anything. Very nice rifle to carry.
First Pre'64 M70 I bought about 1999 was a 1963 300 Win Mag...shoulda kept that one:rolleyes:,..then I had a '57 Fwt 270 and a standard from 1950 in 30-06.
