that SG is quite a find, rechambered or not.
Me, I'd scrounge up a correct year 270 barrel and be happy.
Quite likely, as it is now a belted magnum, the bolt face won't work for .270 anymore either...Unless there is a wildcat belted mag with a .473 bolt face?
anyone who can find a SG can find a std bolt.
in fact I know a gunnut with a couple in a drawer![]()
This is my 300 Win Mag Pre-64, Which is a rare one. I have hunted with it extensively and took my best Elk with it with 180 gr Partitions. Bubba did screw with it some and it was full length bedded with no release agent, so it will stay as is.
I was frigging shaking when I saw that......how in he11 can people do that?...but, it was probably done a long time ago...
now,..to figure out exactly what the chamber is...the barrel is stamped 250 Magnum but the old fellow that owned it left a note with the rifle, which I have, saying it was rechambered to 257 Ackley Magnum.....it is a belted case,..I can see the belt recess in the chamber......it's about .10" shorter to the neck than a 7 Mag case.....
Hi Dave,...I used to own a Pre'64 Model 70 in 300 Win Mag......should have kept that one.....
PS...your 300 and my 250 Ackley would look good on a hunt together![]()
well I lucked into a another Pre 64 Model 70 today thanks to a great guy in a local gunshop...it's as tragic as it is interesting...here are a few pics......the last pic tells the tragic tale......if you like Pre'64 Model 70's and are the least bit squeamish about what gunsmiths may have done to them in the past...don't look at the last picture.....but in the 50's and 60's a Pre'64 Model 70 was just another rifle....
It dates to 1955.
I was looking at that on Sunday. Do we know any more about it since then???
ps: and the answer is YES....I was the one who told him to call you...
Just swapped a Swarovski onto my 300 H&H so I'll add a picture of it here. It's all original and in pretty near perfect condition. It's no problem to shoot with the steel butt plate if you're wondering. It's also probably my favourite hunting rifle and sees lots of action every spring and fall.

Well, after a long wait I finally got my all original 1953 .270. I was a skeptical about the deal from the start as the person who contacted me had only posted here twice and the rifle was not actually his. It was his elderly neighbors that had bought it and all of its accessories in 53 and in all these years it had never changed, just hunted with. It has a Redfield Bear Cub 4x scope sitting in Leupold rings and the original sling. After a good cleaning and trigger adjustment tonight I could tell for sure that action had never been taken out of its stock. The dust and dirt smelled almost 60 years old
Pics and range report to come this weekend.
