Lets see your pre 64 model 70's

This is my 1949 Winchester Model 70, 22 K-Hornet with a 10 power Unertal scope.

Nice!! I have the same scope on my 'vintage' varmint rig, an old custom Winchester Highwall in 219 Donaldson Wasp.

This combination does well with Hornady 50gr V-MAX.

Thats a weird looking Pre 64 model 70 ;) :p

At least you didn't forget the moose John!

:eek:Oh no, I've been had;). I was assured when I purchased it that it was a model 70, from the pre metric era:p.
:)I posted to the thread as the scope is the only one I've seen other than mine.

Sad part for me and my 'Moose thing' is I had to cut my trip short this year as I screwed up my hip. I had a draw for a Bull in the B.C. interior and went for a hunt with my son but sadly it didn't work out this year. I did meet a fine gentleman who is on this site, damadama, that lives in that area and I look forward to the next meet. I may head up to that area in the coming year to thin out the Gopher population, ;)with my pre metric era model 70:p.

I didn't intent to hijack this thread:redface:, but in parting;), here's another Moose for you.

Thats my old vintage '58 270 complete with Weaver tip-off mounts and original Bushnell 4X. All were bought at the same time, and believe it or not if I do everything right the old girl will still break the inch. I'm the second owner, when it was made I was only 12...

This picture-posting thing is new stuff to me or can you tell ?

:)Nothing shabby about your posting of pictures:). Better than my efforts. For me, I made the ability to learn how to post pictures my only New Years Resolution for 2010. With a LOT of assistance and patient guidence from H4831, I made it:redface:, but just under the wire. The size of the pictures you've posted is smaller and a much better size than what I've been doing. One day............... And my 'resolution' for this year was to 'figure out' my GPS, that I received as a gift two years ago. IF I make it, it'll be another one;), just under the wire.

My apologies for side-tracking this fine thread, but Johnn P. you and I have the same teacher/tutor regarding pics, and yes I'm still trying to figure out my damn GPS !

;)You're ahead of me. I haven't taken mine out of the package yet:redface:.. I'm going to have to put an effort in if I want to keep this years resolution. Just took a peek at my 'package', which was a Christmas gift. It's a Lowrance i FINDER EXPEDITIONc. Also, with it I also received a Lowrance Map Create 6 GPS Mapping Accessories PACK. I wonder if our teacher/tutor gives GPS instruction:p? I'm going to have to get my butt in gear and get at it:redface:.

Coming from the era of the slide rule;), technology and I haven't forged ahead at the same pace. A short while ago we were visiting in AB and if I would've thought of it at the time, I should've taken my GPS 'package' with me. After watching how adept our three year old Granddaughter is with some of todays 'goodies', she could probably get me started:p.

My old M70 must weigh well over 9 lbs., and I'm sure I have nearly half a dozen rifles at least 3 lbs. lighter..or better, but it just feels good, really good to carry and brings along too many good memories.
For that reason it still gets its share of hunting trips and then some. ;)

Bit of a side issue but I don't buy a rifle with its weight as a major consideration. I think if 'we' want to pack less weight on a hunt, we'd be better off packing an average weight rifle and applying weight reduction:stirthepot2: to the old bod instead. Still the same gross weight to pack up the hillside but a greater health benefit associated with the personal weight reduction.

I have a 270 Supergrade with standard 24" barrel and an old B&L 2.5-8 on top and it weighs exactly 9lbs....the 308 Featherweight with 3-9 X Leupold is 8lbs even, which , incidentaly is the same weight as a stainless 700 BDL in 7 Mag in a Mcmillan standard fill stock with a 3.5-10 Leupy Tactical on top....

Nowadays an 8lb rifle is not considered a lightweight , but I guess it was in the 50's.

I agree, but at 5'10 and 160 lb., I don't think losing more weight would be a good idea.
When I go hunting with my Brother in the Yukon some of the hills we climb are pretty steep and by the time we get to the top the lighter rifle is really appreciated. ;)

Winchester Mod 70 22 K-Hornet With Unertal Scope. Whats it worth?

This is my 1949 Winchester Model 70, 22 K-Hornet with a 10 power Unertal scope.

What value should I put on this gun and scope?

I could certainly lose a couple pounds, but from the hiking & backpacking I do in the mountains, and the hunting I do in the fall, there's not too many people that can 'out-walk' me. There are some, but not too many.
I certainly appreciate a lightweight rifle, because even if I lose a couple pounds off my gut, that doesn't stop my shoulder from aching after a long day of walking/hiking. When the rifle gets over 7.5 lbs scoped, then after only about 4 hours of walking, my shoulders start to complain.
But if you're not the type of hunter that walks all day [and there's nothing wrong with that] then you don't won't see the need for a light rifle.

;)Just pulling your chain a little:p. For the most part I do agree, it's just that shedding weight from my waist rather than from my rifle would be more of a benefit for me. Deviating from the model 70 topic for a moment, I do have a light weight for those long walks in near vertical terrain. It's a model 4000 Husqvarna light weight in 30-06 I inherited from my Dad.

Getting back on topic, I've just returned from visiting a buddy in the B.C. interior. Years ago when he was trying to get his business off the ground, he wanted to join me on a Moose hunt but was in need of a suitable rifle. I've been lucky and have had a couple of rifles given to me so I thought I'd 'reciprocate' in kind. I had just acquired the 30 cal magnum of my dreams, a Schultz & Larsen in 308 Norma Magnum so I gave him my 'very nice' model 70 Winchester in 300WM. On my recent visit I took a couple of quick pictures.
