The lost passion of Squirrel Hunting.

It seems no one enjoys it very much anymore around me. I find a lot of the older gentlemen I know don't do it and most act surprised that I am an avid tree rat blaster.

So lets see your tree rat blasters!

Also, lets see your game bags if you have them! I use an old mil surplus bag its nothing special but I have seen some pretty awesome wicker packs and things like that to carry game.

Sometimes the 12ga comes out early season to get through the bush but I find it spooks them off after one or two shots.

Sounds interesting, I'd probably wait until I was stuck out in Bush, OR The Apocalypse LOL b4 I'd hunt/eat one :)
 
No pix but I use a savage FV in a beech wood stock in 17 mach 2 or a win 9422 or a savage FV 22lr with cci quiets
I have an oil slick hunting coat that has a game pocket goes all the way around the back. Works great for rabbits tree rats and pheasants
 
Just the old Cooey 64 with a skinny scope but damn that thing works. As far as cooking 5 minutes in the pressure cooker(simmered for 15 in water works as well) followed by enough time on the bbq or broiler to caramelize the sauce of choice. If you get over the rat concept there is little better fare than half a dozen of the little buggers and a plate of home made fries
 
I love squirrel hunting, I use a scoped Brno No.1, but sometimes I prefer to use an old Eatonia single shot 22 with iron sights...depends on my mood...
We used to only have 10 days to hunt them down here and it was during peak deer season, but this year they changed things up and we get over 3 months, looking forward to it.
They taste just as good or better than cottontail, I slow cook them and then use the meat for squirrel salad sandwiches.
 
I used to shoot them when I was a kid at the Cottage but all we have is reds never thought of eating one, grays look like they have more meat and from a lot of hunting shows they are actively hunted in the US and held in the same regard in stews with rabbit.
 
Not enough meat on a red, and what there is is tough and strong. They do more damage than the Grey's do to buildings and sap-lines. Sugar Bush owners usually welcome you for a day of blasting if they have reds.

Then don't ever try it, because it is an addicting pursuit... and once you are over your bias, you realize that they are delicious.

I have used dozens of different firearms on squirrels over the past 40 years, from hunting slingshots and pelletguns to 12 gauge shotguns with lead #6's... but mostly rimfire, my top three favourites are a CZ 452 American in .17 HM2, a CZ 453 .22 LR and an Anschutz 1416 .22 LR. I prefer 36-40 grain HP's for squirrels, except for the CZ 453, which loves CCI SV's so much that I just hunt eyeballs out to 100 yards with a VX-2 6-18x40mm AO mounted.
