lets see your thick bush guns!

Brad I was refering to TGG's post not yours. Strange how she would think a post about loading 303 vs 30-40 krag was about shooting bears.

While I'm usually in the "why can't we get along camp" I have said all I have to say about bear defence and remote areas. Most will never encounter an aggressive bear and the extreme minority that does will be better served by bear spray and a change of location than a .454 casull lever action (which is still a cool gun).

I applaud Ardent's attempts to bring not only this thread but a cool medium bore back to life.

your ultimate, no holds barred bush gun

Now that we are in fantasy territory I'm thinking of a 50 Alaskan Siamese Mauser with an 18.5 inch barrel and ghost ring sights, for the smaller stuff a .243 BRNO stutzen rebarreled to .358. For everything else there's the Bighorn 500 S&W lever action.

Ardent, all your praise about Ruger over the years I figured I had to try one eventually. Just picked up the Ruger Guide Gun off the EE in 30-06. Going to give the irons a go next week see how they work for me out to 200 meters. Should be a great short bush gun for next year!

A couple quick notes I noticed just fondling it in the basement is it is not quite as smooth as my Win 70 EW, which was a bit of a surprise to me and the bolt handle huge the stock just a little closer then I would have liked. But on a plus the iron sights are great, maybe the nicest I have had.

So what would be the ultimate, no holds barred bush gun for you?

For me, it's this action, with a 16-20" .375 2 1/4" Nitro Express barrel screwed on (fancy way of saying .375x57 / 9.5x57MS), synthetic stock, Rigby floor plate and drop box, and iron sights with a quick detach 1-4x20mm.

Have you done that one yet???

P.S - I would go with a 20" barrel length, short enough to be handy, but not too short. I always find myself wishing that my M77 International's had 20" barrels rather than 18.5".

Dont have it yet but have been thinking getting a Ruger Guide Gun in 375 Ruger. Had my eyes on it for a while but in the middle of building a Remington 700 so dont think the girlfriend would like me spending all my money on guns.

What about shotguns here is one of my only pics of my Dlask Arms 8.5" barreled 12 gauge Rem 870 loaded with 3" Brenneke slugs (this was the gun my son packed in when we went into the thick bush after the bear) with my 24 3/16" B&C interior grizzly bush was so thick that I had to cut away the trees to get an area big enough to work/take pictures in.

and here's another pic of the same bear I packed in my cheap little Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 loaded with 525gr Piledrivers @ 1600fps.

I packed these 14" Dlask barrel & Rem 18.5" barrel 12 gauge everywhere before I bought the 1895GS and the 8.5" Dlask

Still waiting on Stuart Satterlee to finish off the action, but we're getting mighty close. Should be ready for when you get here, have my dies, properly headstamped brass even at $5 a pop landed, ".375 Rimless Nitro".

It seems like the brush guns thread has turned into the bear guns thread. I'm not much of a bear killer but I've shot a few. A friend of mine has probably shot more than most of us have seen and he has used everything you can imagine to do it. When it comes to bears, I don't worry too much about them but I do usually carry a gun when walking in the woods. I have always done so since I was a kid. I carry the gun because (a) I like to and (b) it's training for hunting season. I have never had to shoot a bear to protect myself but did have one bluff-charge to within twenty feet before he stopped (a black bear). I confess to occasionally being a little nervous when solo camping in bear country (like the one night when I nearly pepper-sprayed a bunny which was rustling around near the foot of my bag) but I don't obsess over it. When I'm alone, I usually have my dog along as an early warning system (if a bear approaches, I'll know because she'll probably try and crawl into the sleeping bag) but didn't have her along on the night of the bunny.
One time, I had a pair of Ontario hunters out and we were watching a very large mountain grizzly at a range of about 65 yards (on the other side of a draw, mind you). One of the hunters commented that he felt better knowing I had that big gun (I was carrying the 35 Whelen). I felt better knowing I could easily outrun both of them!

Here is my all time favorite bush gun my factory tapered 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps.

It started life chambered in 375 Win I understand it shot a few moose in Newfoundland before I acquired it from the original owner.

I sent the barrel to SSK Ind had JD Jones the designer of the JDJ series of cartridges rechamber it, I replaced the factory black Rynite stocks with black/gray laminate the buttstock is from gunstocksinc the forend is from Boyds, scope is an older Vari X111 2.5-8X36mm I had Tony at Korth Ind replace the standard duplex reticle with a B&C reticle.

Scope base is a 4 screw Stratton Custom and the rings are low Leupold QRW's this is definitely not a lightweight combo as pictured it comes in at just under 7.5lbs and 8.25lbs with 6 bullets in the Cadle Ridge butt stock shell holder that's now on it.

I have it zeroed 1" high at 100 yards with the main reticle - first B&C reticle line down is 1" high at 200 yards - second B&C reticle line down is dead on at 300 yards where the 260gr Accubond is still doing appr 1800fps and is still retaining over 1900 ft/lbs energy.

The factory iron sights are zeroed at 100 yards.

I have shot one 6' black bear and several deer with it I've even taken it grizzly hunting as my main rifle surprisingly it is one of my most accurate rifle/cartridge combos.

A Remington 700 416 rem mag with a 21" barrel. Breathes fire from both ends. Very accurate, but has yet to be along on a kill...

This is my 416, a Taylor built by my late Brother over 20 years ago when he attended school in Trinidad Colorado.
Weight as pictured is 9.5 lbs., and makes for a nice powerful package.
He tagged his first Yukon Bison with it as well as numerous Moose and a couple big Bears.
Its built on a '03-A3 Springfield with an octagon Douglas Premium barrel.
According to him it had enough power that it " Coulda been a single shot "..
Function is as smooth as a watch and I for one would not want it an ounce lighter...

Wow!
I'm not sure what I like the most on that.
03 Springfield...
Full rib octagon barrel...
Or the calibre.
Beautiful piece. Thanks for posting
