lets talk custom reamers!

I'm just trying to get my head around this ......

would it be correct to say that the heel of the of where the reamer was ground is making contact before the cutting edge ?

After a reamer is round ground, it then requires back cutting some of the round behind the cutting edge to give clearance. Without adequate clearance it does not cut easily and requires a lot of force and eventually will bind up in the partially cut chamber.

This picture shows the burnishing when it binds. It appears to have marked the chamber but in reality it is on the surface and polishes away very quickly.

Thank you for the input Ian,

Dave Manson , so far seems to run a good business, i shot off an e-mail late last night, and with in a few hrs of being up this morning had a reply, and as my reamer is only changing a few dimensions, offered to re-grind one of his standard reamers to match what i had wanted. which would bring the lead time down to 6ish weeks as opposed to 6months for a full custom...

little bit more then PTG but the fact that he e-mailed me back is already better then what iv got from PTG to begin with

Hugh Henricksen made my .284 win reamer and it is very nice. I stopped buying PT&G reamers and certain cutting tools for awhile.

I just ordered a thousand bucks worth of stuff from PTG hopefully I don't get screwed. I have one reamer from them that has the grind done wrong. Still cut the chamber with but it was exactly like Dennis says

Dennis I like the pins under the jaws idea. I've been using flat pieces of copper and not liking it that much

Bought a PTG .308 Obermeyer reamer. It cut really nice but was .006" undersize FFS. And I do have the means to measure it. When I called to complain the iceholes told me that the problem was the .308 Lapua brass that I was using and that there was a special .308 reamer for Lapua brass. I am thinking my next reamer will be a Clymer and PTG can go and have ### with their hat.

Anyone want to buy a .006" undersize .308 Obermeyer reamer?

It is common to make a Lapua brass reamer slightly larger at the web. 6 thou undersize would work well with Winchester brass which is always smaller than sammi specs.

I had my .284 built using the PTG match .284 reamer with 140 freebore for the 180s. It shoots any of the 175-190 grain bullets great. Friggen hates anything lighter though. Might be the twist though. My question is if PTG builds so much garbage, why are they selling so much product? I have to assume that if you out sell you competition by 500-1000% you will eventually have more failures on the market. Can't comment on the customer service though. I was pleasantly surprised when I called in to get input on my reamer and got Dave Kiff directly. I though I would just get some random customer service monkey answering the phone. I'm not a smith though so obviously Ian and Guntech will have more experience in this that I will. Maybe I just got lucky and I will have to look at some other brand reamer for my rebarrel when the time comes. Who does redding get reamers from to use to cut their dies?

that right there is the issue, the pump out so much product that QC takes a hit.. but the real problem is, they more or less refuse to do any thing about it, and IF they do, they take their sweet azz time about it, and try and blame the customer...

I have had 7-8 barrels chambered with an Obermeyer reamer. Never had problems chambering a round with Lapua, Remington, Winchester, RUAG, RG, IVI, HPS or DA brass. A reamer ground .006" undersize isn't a minimum sammi spec reamer it is a quality control screw up.

I have bought several reamers that were under size, an 11 degree crown tool that would not cut small enough for a 22 barrel, range rods that were too big to take any bushing other than the one that was supplied with it (obviously on purpose). In fact I have never bought a reamer from them that was correct. If I get one from a customer I give them the facts and they decide if they should take the chance. When you use a 308 reamer and need a special sizing die it's because the reamer cut under size, it's not because it's "special" or "custom" or "match" or any other nonsense that you may be fed.

This is a good thread. I am debating on buying my own 308 reamer for when I rebarrel my F/TR rifle. Ian do you have a recommendation on whos and what version for a 308 F/TR lapua bras no turn for shooting 155-185's?

Thanks

My comment was more of a facetious one about Winchester brass being so out of spec (been making undersize brass for 40 years now) ... reamers 6 thou off are just plain wrong.

Manson or JGS, I have never had a problem with either.. Manson is cheaper.

My 7mm Rem Mag reamer that has cut over a hundred great shooting barrels is a cheap old Clymer that I altered the throat on slightly. I did receive one Clymer reamer without any back grind once about 1970-71.

Well Dennis, you'll be glad to know my order is in with Manson.. wont be bringing you any more rifles with PTG reamers after you had to sort out the last one for me..

I would talk to JGS if you want a custom reamer and they probably have a print already that would do the job but you need to pick a weight, 155 or 185 one won't do them all perfectly but it depends on what you expect to do.
