lets talk custom reamers!

Well Dennis, you'll be glad to know my order is in with Manson.. wont be bringing you any more rifles with PTG reamers after you had to sort out the last one for me..

I recently chambered a 6.5x47 Lapua for a customer and purchased the reamer from him after the job was completed... it is a Manson and cut one of the easiest smoothest chambers I have ever cut.

This is a great thread. I have really learned a lot. I guess on my next build I will be a little more wary on my reamer selection. I didn't really know there was this much to it. Im glad I browsed this one. Is there a number of uses you can get on a reamer before you need to purchase another? Does anyone know what brand reamers ATRS is using for the 338 Improved they are building? I have the matching dies for his reamer print.

as far as uses go, that can be a fairly big variable... if your smith knows what hes doing, lots of cutting fluid proper feed speed etc, a good reamer should last quite a few barrels.. but like any machining tool that cuts, cram it in hard, and get it way to hot, its not going to hold up to good..

id assume it will vary also depending if you cut more stainless barrels, or cro-mo barrels

Chambering quality barrels, I doubt a gunsmith would 'wear' a reamer out. They can be sharpened by hand without changing dimensions if you know what you are doing. I have a Clymer reamer working just fine and it has done over 100 barrels that all shot great...

That's good to hear on the Clymer reamer end of it. If the feller who's getting my McGowen barrel threaded
up for me is a tad too slow, or backed up on work orders to call me for sending him the reamer and guages
to finish this barrel, then I'll just get it sent home and swing by your shop.:)

The problem is that if the reamer does not cut exactly what the print says then anything else made to that print right or wrong will not match.
