Let's talk double rifles, from a beginners perspective.

Thanks Jay! I’ll keep it in mind, but I haven’t even taken anything yet with my .458wsm.

And I checked and see that Ont had a 1000lb black bear harvested and here our record is a piddling 868lbs, so wishing you good luck this spring with your double.

If I could just see this guy... He'd get two 470NE 500 grain pills right quick!

I'm going to have an excellent condition Blaser S2 coming up for sale pretty soon. It has two barrel sets, a 30-06/30-06 and and a 30-06/20ga if anyone might be interested.

look what this thread did to me lol.

the double rifle is a Russian made Baikal. its chambered in 45-70.

its somewhat of a project, although it can be put back to factory spec without issue but the project part of it will make it a nicer rifle for sure. the main focus on turning it into a project is to bring the barrels parallel to each other and add a heavier rib to replace the 0.020" thick sheet metal rib that's on it.

the factory barrel regulator will still work but I may solder the ribs on and use the front band/front sight block to regulate them at the muzzle with an acentric ring or wedges

ill make a project post on it but here are some pics

I had a weak moment the other day. I thought about selling my Merkel 140ae in 470NE...

Then I snapped out of it LOL!

If you want to borrow the 470 for a hunt, it's yours.

All I ask is: pics!

Cheers
Jay

I like the case colors

Bison’s a prime application on this continent for a double. It’s been a dozen years, but there used to be a no tag, no season buffer zone to keep TB infected park bison away from the clean Zama herd in Northern Alberta. Not a gimme hunt, takes some logistics, and not sure if rules have since changed.

I shot a Merkel in a 470 NE, and it bloody well hurt! It hurt on the shoulder and nose from one shot.

Then it either didn't fit you or your hold was off, ...... the .470 is reasonable rifle to shoot in my opinion.

Hell, I shot my first bison in the 70's with a 38-55! They usually aren't hard to put down if you hit them right. My last shot at a bison wasn't good after going thru a tree!
