Lets talk turkey

Quaker Boy waterproof box call & push pin call work for me. They work wet or dry which is nice. Mouth calls are my favorite, but some people find them hard to get used too. Practice as much as you can off season. Best way to learn is to get out & listen to the turkeys. Best of luck with your hunt.

George
thanks glang - I was trying to make up my mind between the quakerboy and the heartbreaker and I think I'll go with the quakerboy. I almost got an electronic one until I was reminded that those are illegal.

Quaker Boy:eek: Wouldn't be seen in the woods with one;)
Just so ya don't think I'm guff'n about turkey calls here's a couple I made for friends last year.
Curly spalted maple

That's just a few:D:D
BTW I'm "TomTalker" on them there NWTF and Custom Call forums

BT! I knew I'd get a rise out of ya;)
Way more turkey's killed ever year with a Quaker boy call no doubt than there are with customs. Kinda like a fat girl a Cooey or a Honda, they get the job done;) I like the idea of a hand hewn piece of wood matched to a hand shaped lid made from hand selected wood way better than a piece of stuff from a saw mill sent to a CNC shaper and assembled by a factory worker in a city that aint ever seen a turkey and only cares about a paycheck at the end of the week. Probably a matter of time before they're made in China:D Either way it's more about being out there using what ever you perfer and learning to use it to get your bird.
No offence to QB, HS Strut or the other factory calls. We all know they sound great and kill birds with great success and will continue to do so.My personal preference is to custom stuff;)

Boy, I work for QuakerBoy and I don't seem to have a problem killing turkeys all over North America , so QuakerBoy can't be that bad...:slap:

Adrian, some arguements arent worth wading into buddy...
Will a quaker boy call contribute to the death of a turkey? Yes.
And if I were in your shoes, thats all I'd use too.
But, If you could make a call as beautiful as those Tom makes, and have em sound as good as they do, you'd have no need for an off the shelf call...

Like most of us with Tom's calls, I have absolutely no need to buy off the shelf calls when I know someone who can produce a far superior custom product. Anyone who has one I know, its the only boxcalls they use.
But, they're not the same price as off the shelf calls if your lucky enough to get one. For those who dont know a callmaker, or dont have the skills themselves, Quaker boy calls will work as well if not better than the next off the shelf product... But if you had one of the above calls, you wouldnt want to put it in your pocket, you'd be flashing it to all your turkey buddies like a new shotgun. I've used three or four shotguns in the last few years for birds, but one boxcall....
:sniper:

Ya I lent you my 870 ORIGINAL Max Gobbler with the GT choke and you never gave it back! I just ended up with a wad of 20's instead. Oh well, can only shoot one at a time I guess.

Tom's calls are frankly the super model of box calls....the turkeys take a little long to get to you because they stop off short and blow their warm up load first as not to seem ...well lets just say over sensative! Nothing works better in high winds or foggy mornings than a nice loud box call. Still love my diaphrame calls though....I'll always have a lap full of those and drool running down my chin.

Thanks for the endorsment guys;) Not trying to push calls here guys just want to share some pics since the season is a coming up.Here's a couple more!
Chilly's "Terminiter" Worm Butternut B&T with a Maple paddle instead of Walnut.
2nk2t7l.jpg

A Spalted Chestnut call in the foeground with a paddle that is made to join the spalt lines in the box to those in the paddle. In the background is some Cocobola, Honduran Rosewood, Cherry and Butternut. Whatcha think of that there SPUR;)
eur4tv.jpg

Without a doubt the ugliest dang call I ever made and subsequently swaped to Doug for a barrel. Honduran Rosewood base(appears to be the top since the calls is upside down). Soundboards are spalted curly maple as is the paddle

Tom, don't take me wrong, you have some of the best Custom out there. You are a little wrong with your thoughts on mass as the Quakerboy wood plant is run in Bradford PA. heart of Wild turkey country. The word of other mass being pushed to other contries to be made on a low cost program maybe right but you will not ever hear tell of Quakerboy heading that way. The plant is run by only a half dozen people or so and every box calls is made in that plant. They have all the equipment to do any box call.

Box calls Long or short are a lot of fun, but the guy behind them is the main operator in wether or not they sound real good. I'm nether here or there with any box call, just enjoy using them. You make great calls, just don't dump on the people that you got ideas from, thats all i'm thinking...

Keep up the good work...

Maybe we can work together you sell the calls and I'll give the tips

BT! Glad to see you have a DVD out. Wouldn't mind a copy.
You have to see my point of veiw on some of the mass calls in general if not just QB. For instance the "Egg" or what ever they call it and I aint even sure who makes it and the Hurricane I think it is. The stuff is moulded plastic. No doubt they are calling turkeys but ya aint gonna see one sitting under my big old Hemlock opening morning:D
My jab at factory calls wasn't meant to get your tailfeathers smokin' but more as a statement of personal preference. As well likely lots of guys here haven't had thier interest piqued towards customs as you don't see many call makers unless you get on some of the Yankee sites. There are hundreds of custom call makers in the US mostly in the South so exposure here is minimum. Just a handfull here and most don't advertise. I don't and I also donate for causes like NWTF nearly as many as I sell in a season. Dumpin' on the guys I get my ideas from. BT! come on know! I must admit I bought and dismantled a Quaker Boy Owl Hooter a few years back. Makes a purty good coyote howler with the protecter off;) If the server aint too busy I'll post some earlier calls including my first and you likely won't see any clones to QB's. Got to remember also the longbox and the shorter Lynch, Turpin and such were around way before QB entered the scene so who got ideas from who?
Anyhow I've been playing with some pots and wingbones too this past year and I have a hunch my first tube call will be in my pocket this season. Made a circle cutter for glass, picked up a four jaw chuck and a cute little scroll chuck for the lathes. Have a bunch of slate shingles that I'm having some divided success in cutting:D and curly maple, walnut, cherry and bowelder burl coming out my behind. Picked up some Cocobola, Purple Heart and Paduak this afternoon at Lee Valley. Several calls to guys here on this forum and some to the US are on the list. Neigbours are gonna love me:D:D:D
First ever boxcall I made after seeing my first turkey and going straight tio the library for turkey hunting info. Butternut was the favorite wood of the author and I just happened to have some. She sports a cedar shingle paddle and worm butternut sound boards I've made some design changes here and there along the way;)

This call I made for Claude Gatewood who those into 10/22's will recognize. Claude called it his tomtalker and since that day I call them TomTalkers. his is TomTalker #1
or6sg8.jpg

#2 I swapped for a rattler skin to a feller in South Carolina but here is #3 made for Jim Sabier of Sabier.com Small caliber news. Those into sub .22 caliber varmint rifles will know who he is. Cherry and curly maple

Bottom of same call

#17 another "Feather" call. Butternut and Claro Walnut. Call #4 is also Claro and Butternut. It resides with Peter H. who is Office Labratory Administration Manager @ Johns Hopkins University. Pete does alot of research on mokeys and such and has been very active in HIV research. Not much QB cloning going on here;)

I'd be interested to know what everone is using for for a choke in there 12guages? I just bought a Undertaker turkey choke for my 870. Just was using the improved for the past 5 years. It worked well but I was getting some floppers the odd time. This choke should blow his head right off with a good placed shot.

federal #5, 1.75 ounce turkey loads.

I Use an Undertaker .660 on my 20" barrel. On my 30" barrel I use a Hastings .670. I can't interchange since the long barrel came with out screwins and was retrofitted with Truechoke threads. I ported the .670 and it will out pattern the Undertaker. Also have a Ported Hastings .650. It shoots very tight but will tend to "clump" with heavy loads. This "clump" can be desireable at a Turkey Shoot if it lands in the right place:D
What the porting I did effects is the separation from the wad and shot colume. Federal came out with a wad that parachutes to achieve the same results. Flite Control I think they call it and I used them with good success My porting works like a cheese grater to stall the wad. I'm half tempted to port the Undertaker.
Here's some reults with the Flite control wad #6 in different chokes @around 30yrds.

Here's a pic of some wads after going through the cheese grater

Hey Big Mike! I was putting together a fileing cabinet just now for the Boss of the house and I came across a shortbox kit I made for a buddy a few years back. Since then he left note in the frying pan for his wife and fuched off to Winipeg with a woman he met on the internet:D. A few other things have happened to him since that insure he aint a gonna be hunt'n turkeys anytime soon;) Its spalted curly maple with butternut side boards. It doesn't have a paddle with it but I can fix that real quick:D. If you're handy at glueing and shapeing you make yourself a nice call. If you click on the url in my sig line you'll see on just like it. It was likely cut the same day and out of the same block of wood. It has more spalting than the one pictured. If you're up to taking some time out of studies to do some glueing and fileing she's yours;)

Yup that's the brain right behind the eye. Any of those shot in the spine are just as deadly. When your heart is pounding and that gobbler is thinking departure cuz he just saw the movement of your finger on the safety you just hold 'er under noggin and let'r go. Knowing your pattern and where to hold is an important part of your prehunt

2nr9kk.jpg

Is the "centre" of this target the kill zone for a head shot? Is the brain the mass directly behind the eye in the target as well?

LH
This shot position was in my course for my pal . anywhere just below the head in the neck area. I can hardly wait to shoot one!:shotgun:

Best of luck LionHill in your BC hunt !
