Hey all, well I finally made the money to start building my M24, and I'm trying to figure out what kind of scope to buy. It's most likely either Leupold or Nightforce, but I'm trying to build a sort of M24 so most likely Leupold. However, I'm stuck between the Mk4 M1 and the M3. I like the idea of a BDC because I might be hunting with this rifle, and will be doing F-Class/Precision rifle matches, however the adjustments are only 1/2 and 1MOA, which seems a bit imprecise. The M1 I'm looking at is the front focal plane Mil-Dot, which has 1/4 MOA click adjustments, but no BDC. Any suggestions? Other scope recommendations?

Also, what about tactical milling vs. mil-dot?

If you are talking about Leupolds TMR Rectical..."tactical milling" it is the same system as the Mil-dot with 3.6" on a miliradian just in a hash mark setup that gives a better unobstructed view at longer ranges. It also has .5 miliradian hash marks and .20 milliradian hash marks for more precise rangeing. unlike the football style or dot style mil-dot scopes. I know this pic has been posted a dozen times in these threads but here it goes again. Its a great scope. This is the view at a target at 1000 at 20X with the Leupold Mk4 6.5-20 TMR rectical

Thanks for the reply.
I'd much rather have a TMR than a Mil-Dot, but it also depends on price and functionality. Is the TMR easier to use and more precise in all situations?

It is more precise in that it has .5 and .20 hash marks to make rangeing and windage or holdover more accurate, but in the world of Laser rangefinders ranging with a mil-dot is more of a hobby than a necessity for us weekenders. It is more precise in that it gives you a better field of view,(in my opinion) than a standard mil-dot scope. Other than that it is a matter of personal preferance and purpose. Accuracy realy comes down to the man behind the bolt everything else is just a tool to help achieve his goals.

Thanks for the replies.
LRC: Around here, at least, rangefinders are quite expensive, so I think a milling reticle would be quite useful (and quite a useful skill to have). Army Recce still uses mil-dot ranging, don't they?
Skby: I'm not going to do much F-Class shooting, but I will be practicing with the BCRA on weekends. As far as competitions go, I'm most likely going to be doing service rifle through the army using C7's (CScot matches and such), and Precision Rifle matches. Do you still think an M1 is best suited for that? Also, is the second focal plane scope worth the extra $$$?

Hi

I have an M3, I like it a lot. But the point of impact always seems to be a tad to high, one click down, now it's a tad to low. If you are shooting at groundhogs at 400y it's not a problem. You want to hit a looney at the same range, that's another story.

Now, having said that, a friend of mine, that has the same rig as me (700PSS with a M3) had only ever shot it up to 300Y. He got invited to a match at camp Borden, first time ever shooting 600, 500, 400Y. He knew his clicks, easy to count 1 inch clicks, he won the match. So, the M3 does work good.

I'm looking for a variable power scope preferably, depending on the pricing. I'm looking for a front focal plane M1, if possible. How much extra would I expect to pay for front focal, TMR and variable?

Get the M1 if you are doing the precision matches.

If you are shooting through the Army in Service rifle, then you will be using an ELCAN.;)

The M1/LR 3.5 - 10 X 40mm Mildot is a great scope.I have used several of them, and currently have a M1/LR Illuminated Mildot on my SPR clone.

Keep in mint the only "REAL" Mark IVs are the fixed power ones (M3A, the M1 10X, and the M1 16X).The Variable M1 Models are not true Mark IVs.

My advice, buy the S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM-II....... :D

For service rifle I'll be using C7's and C79's, but for Precision I'll have to use my own rifle (which I prefer anyways). What's the price difference between a Mk4 and the S&B? I'm hoping to spend no more than about $1200 on a scope/rings/bases.

Ed you hit the nail on the head, S&B is the holy grail :D And you're shooting with one!

As for an S&B LR rig, you'd be about double your budget.

Retail on the S&B 5 - 25 X 56mm PM-II is $3595.00 + taxes/shipping from Wolverine Supplies.Plus you need 34mm rings, so add another $300.00 to $400.00 + taxes/shipping.

Not cheap, but definately SUPER GROOVY CAT COOL!!!!!!:D

Holy frick! I don't think I'm ready to spend $4000 on "super groovy cat cool" at the moment:p...I think I'll just stick with a Mk4...if it's good enough for the army, it's good enough for me :p.
What about the price difference between 1st and 2nd focal plane?

Ahhhh Grasshopper, but the USMC Snipers have picked the S&B 3 - 12 X 50mm PM-II as their new issue scope.........;)

The Army is still in the stone age............. :D

SKBY.:p

Skby: DANGIT! Oh well, I'm not a Marine; "hooah" all the way! What is your opinion on the Mk4's? Are they worth the $$$? I'm definately not ready to pay $4000 for a scope though...
Ardent: Say now I had no interest in a fixed 16x. What is your opinion now:D? I'll consider, but I want a no-marketing ploy opinion.
