I just got a New Vortex Viper scope and was mounting it on my Remington 700 last night using Leupold PRW rings and a Millett rail base. I got it snugged on and my keen eye picked up on something that didn't look quite right. When looking at the rings from the front or rear it seems that the claw piece is canted a bit. I did up a crude drawing( I forgot to take a pic) and it may be exaggerated slightly but you get the idea.

I am wondering if it might be the rail that is out of tolerance. Although I have been using it prior to installing the leupold rings. Or are the rings supposed to fit like that?

Also I may be in the market for a better quality rail to fit the rifle: Rem sps tactical short action, .308. Any suggestions?

I think your rail is out of spec. I tried this combo with the same peices in our shop and it fit properly. I would believe the Millet part is where the problem is. We have several options in rails including Leupold Mark 4 ...15 moa $169, ATRS stainless steel 20 moa...$195, Nightforce 40 moa...$127, Weaver Tactical 20 moa...$51 and Weaver tactical flat...$24. Phil.

Well I recieved my new Weaver rail from Phil at P&D, (great service, thanks Phil) but I still have a problem. I Mounted the rings/scope on the new rail and I still have a canted claw. So I decided to try the rings on my Sadlak steel mount on my Norinco M14, and still get the same thing. I attached some pics to give you an idea whats going on. It seems that the claw also has a slight bend to it now, most likely from when I was initially tightening it down on the other rail.

It is now my belief that the actual claw part is too short judging from my trial and errors. Perhaps some one could even measure a claw to determine if mine is in fact out of spec.
So now can anyone tell me if I can purchase just a couple of the claw parts for the rings?

You could try Korth Agencies in Okotoks AB . They are the Leupold importer and have a service centre with helpful technicians.
Be prepared , they may tell you if not mounted on a Leupold base no assurance of fit can be made even though the various makes are made within a tolerance range.
The cross bolts shouldn't need to be torqued such that they bend that short span of steel - 50-60 inch pounds.

Why do you care what angle the clamp sits at? The 3 fixed surfaces establish the position, the clamp just pulls it all together. Whether the clamp is straight, angled, bent or painted blue doesn't change that.

I care because it doesn't look right. And if it doesn't look right it might be sloppy. And if it appears like a sloppy setup I start thinking that maybe it won't hold my scope properly.
But if the concensus is that they are all like that then fine, but I had to ask. Some people are content just to accept things as they are I guess I expected more from Leupold.
