Level 2 IPSC Match Stage Approval

What I have come to notice over the years is that no matter who designs stages on paper they are only truly really checked out, as safe, or no RO traps, shoot throughs, etc untill they are constructed. Paper 1 dimentional cannot be used as the only way to sanction matches. Yes, it does help with walkthroughs & stage procedure being correct,But thats all.

I have never used any other program than Google SketchUp for stage design. I have all of our ranges built to scale in 3d. So, when designing stages, it is a simple matter to see if there are any problems, RO Traps, 90 Traps etc. It is also useful to see what stages will work on what ranges. The program is fairly straight forward to use, and all targets are already pre-made, all one has to do it paste in the target combos they want...easy peasy!

The purpose of match approval is not necessarily to make sure that your stage diagrams are very pretty or that it looks good on paper. Stage diagrams are often a guide more than the rule and during setup, the Match Director/RM should be looking for things like DQ traps and make adjustments accordingly.

The primary function of stage approval is to check for compliance with the rules. I've recently seen matches that forced shooters to do a mandatory reload between the 8th and 9th rounds on a Virginia count stage in contravention of the rulebook.

Range safety is the purview of the Range Master. Maybe something looked good on paper and passed Match Approval. That doesn't mean that the MD has carte blanche to set up the stage however they want. The RM is the ultimate authority on the match, and if he doesn't think the stage is a fair test/unsafe, he'll pull it despite what the Match Director or Match Approval has to say on the matter.

Match Approval is only there to work with the Match Director to see that the rules are being employed properly; (s)he should have nothing to do with debugging the proposed stage/diagram for safety issues.

You know that actually makes some sense..............A MD course.

HOW to design stages, how to run a match............that I would be behind so people do not have to flounder in the dark.

There has been talk on Global Village of creating a 'style guide' of sorts for course/match design.

In Manitoba, aspiring MD's basically get mentored by experienced guys while setting up matches... and if a match is crappy that MD doesn't get to try again. There are some incentives to be an MD but usually we have to work together to get all the scheduled matches covered.

damn, foiled again, how the hell did I miss that? oh well. So does the Canadian Region have a set of criteria or procedures then? As it appears that's the only way to do this, not each province having it's own setup.

Point 14 of Appendix A (the section you actually should have read)

Note that international sanctioning of Level I and Level II matches is not required. However each Regional Directorate is entitled to establish their own criteria and procedures for sanctioning of Level I and Level II matches held within their own Region.

Keep in mind that the Sections only exist within Canada. We all belong to IPSC Canada...and are governed by the IPSC Canada Constitution...which essentially leaves things like this up to the section...

Regardless...Conservative Majority!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
