hey guys, kinda new to this site, im looking for a lever action in .308, not sure how to search this site yet, if anyone can help that would be great. im looking for a model 88 or a savage 99... any input or info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I own a pre 81 BLR in 308 and its a real nice rifle. I like the savages too but the deal was good on the BLR so I got it and have been happy with it.

Welcome aboard newbie.
Don't listen to some, well one for sure that will
try and nudge you to the Model 100...............
BLR or the BLR 81.

Great to have you on the forum. It would be hard to find a non-quality lever in .308. The BLR is about the only show in town if you want a new gun. The Savage 99 is about the coolest (in my books) and there is a cult like following of the Winchester 88.

Ok.Order of guns to try out for fit.nothing wrong with any of the choices, just some are better than others.Model 88 winchester, shows my age ,but worth a look.Model 100 winchester,is a semi, so not for everyone, but feels much like the model 88.For me a BLR 81 Browning is also a good choice to try, for fit.The old fellows that have been able to hang onto their 88s do not regret it,nearly as much as the ones who did not.Without exception,as even Looky longs for his!The savage just do not fit me,but are good guns as well. The finnwolf, you went to the well once to often.Good luck,as all are good choices,to pick from.

I'd have to agree on the BLR, but not the take down version for me.
A Winni 88 is damn fine if you come across a primo specimen, likewise
for a Savage 99. Try out each gun for fit & feel, then go from there.
;)

I have a Savage 99 in .308 and love it. No, it's not for sale :)
I haven't cared much for the 88's I've tried. They seem to be quality made but they just don't feel right to me and the triggers were not so nice.

I got my 99 in .308 on the EE. I put a WTB add and within a day I had about 20 to chose from, personally I went with a F model because I wanted to scope mine.

I prefer the Winchester 88, but they tend to go over $500.

Savage 99 on the other hand are also good rifles and you can get them a lot cheaper. Seen one in mint condition for $375. I kinda regret not picking it up.:(

I've owned three different BLR's in .308 Win.... two with the stickout mags, one with the flush mag. Have owned a Win 88 in .308 Win in pre 64 trim. All were good rifles. For practical purposes, I'd own any of them again.

Currently have a pre-mil serial number Savage 99F in .308 Win. I really like this rifle & have deemed it a "keeper".

Levers suck, big time! Go with a Remington 760 or 7600. They are better than levers on every level.

You can thank me for this bit of awesomeness later. ;)
