Light Magnum 30/06

Velocity gives you DRT results, not heavy and slow. (unless you hit the central nervous system, but I don't take spine/head shots)

DRT does not exist, I have seen deer hit with 3006 from 15 yards, in the heart and it got up and ran 100 yards. There is no such thing, unless you hit it with a cannon. The only way to drop a deer on the spot 100% of the time is a brain shot. That is why we are taught how to track. 4000fps may cause a lot of shock but with that shock is the destruction of meat, there is a balance and I have found that 2700fps and less is better, 2500fps impact velocity is ideal.

I've had several deer drt, and I don't use a cannon. It's not predictable or certain, but to say it doesn't exist is too much of a stretch.

Yes, you could have several do that, but there is no gun that will do this 100% of the time, you can hammer them and they can run off. I have seen deer with 12ga shotguns drop on the spot and 270 Win run a km, both with vitals hits, there is no cut and dry. I am sure a 9.3x62 to the vitals would hurt them though.

Not a very vital hit if the deer ran a KM before expiring. 300 meters, maybe, but a Km with a vital hit??
Only possibility I can think of is absolutely NO expansion of the bullet, and it penciled through.

I have been privileged to live in a game rich area of BC since I started hunting. In the intervening years,
I have shot a lot of deer. Fully 1/3 of them were DRT. But as you say, no rifle or bullet guarantees a DRT
result every time.

This years doe Whitetail ran about 75 yards before piling up after a shot that literally demolished both
her lungs.

About the farthest I have had a deer run with a properly placed hit was around 175 yards...actually
surprised me that he made it that far with no lungs. Dave.

Hit broadside at less than 20 yards, the bullet blew up and only took out 1 lung. The deer ended up dying right on an ATV trail after a 1km run after the shot.

It was an example that nothing is perfect and nothing is for certain.

The craziest one to me was a buck my dad hit. Rem core lok 180gr 30/06, about a 40 yard shot, centered on the heart. That deer ran about 50 yards, when he went to check on it about 20min later it got up and went another 15 yards then kept lifting his head to look at him. He could not shoot again as he did not have a safe shot, had to back out and let it die. That spot was a spot hunting around cottages, lots of safe shooting but a few places that were not safe and this deer ended up in one of them.
