Light weight hunting rifle in 30-06

Hi everyone,

Can someone please recommend me a light weight hunting rifle in 30-06 that doesn't break the bank and doesn't group like a shotgun. I'm thinking < $700. Wood or synthetic stock is fine by me.

Winchester M-70 featherweight or a Tika T-3. As mentioned above you will need to go used or save more if wanting new. Then you have optics on top of that. You also did not mention action type. The above two are bolt.
 
As far as light weight goes, my .308 Savage Axis is pretty darn light. With a few little tweaks to the trigger and stock I have been able to get 1 1/4" groups at 200 yards with Hornady Match brass, 155 gr Hornady V-Max, and 45.5 gr Varget. For $700 you could get the rifle and some half decent glass. Plus since it's just a Savage Axis you won't feel bad about hauling it around in the bush and getting it scratched up.
 
Featherweight was an appropriate name in 1960 but now its just average.
How light do you want to go?
Most standard rifles weigh 7 lbs +-
Savage Axis is light and cheap, buy 3 and keep the one that shoots the best.
Ruger American might be another choice.
Getting an 06 under 6.5 lbs wont be cheap.
 
You might be stuck on a 30/06 and thats ok. But if i were going to a light weight carry rifle I may go to a little less recoil in a cartridge like 7mm08 or .260 or something. Could depend on what and where you are going to be hunting with it.

I know a fellow who got a Rem. model 7 in 7mm08 for his wife to hunt with. He likes shooting and carrying it so much he uses it now more that any of his other many rifles.
 
As a previous poster said the Win Featherweight is not too light. It weighs around 7 lbs. before adding scope, rings, sling and ammo. Will be comfortable to shoot but not be a light weight. It isn't too easy to get a "cheap" light weight that shoots well. I have a M85 Sako Finnlight in 30-06 that fits the description but it sure wasn't cheap.

There is a Browning A bolt in 30 06 on the equipment exchange , 22" barrel under 7 lb. I have one in 300 wm I really like it. I would suggest that you handle an example of what ever rifle you are considering.
 
I second the save your money and get a kimber Montana. I have one in 338 win mag and its nice to carry around the stock is great at soaking up recoil.
 
I say give up on ultra light and buy a new Zastava M98 from Trade Ex... It is a really nice rifle for the money and will come in under your budget.

If you want something dependable that you can be proud to own budget for $1000-$1200. Buy any Remington 700, Winchester 70, maybe even a Ruger 77 (haven't owned one of those) and put it into a Wildcat Composite or Mcmillan Edge stock. It will be lightweight, sturdy and last a lifetime or two.

If you want to go with "reasonable" weight buy an M70 Featherweight...I think they go for 800ish now? I am personlly not a Tikka T3 fan but you could also get one of those....blued/syn. are pretty inexpensive.

True lightweights in the $700 class don't really exist.
