Lightweight 300 wm

Negative comb on the stock can make all the difference on perceived recoil too, lacking the same punch in the cheek by an otherwise similar rifle. As long as your shoulder is up for it anyways.

A Wby Mrk-V Ultralite in 300 Winmag would be light with a Leupold UltraLite scope and rings of choice and three rounds might tip the scale at 7.5 pounds.
But, it too will kick like a mule and test ones mettle at not being recoil shy.
I'm almost embarrassed to that I feel uncomfortable shooting my No.1 in .338 Winmag (225grn boolits) with a soft recoil pad .
My back teeth rattle and there are several seconds of unpleasantness after each shot.
Sooo, the choice is yours .
Do not make a snap decision you will regret $$$ wise.
Rob

I got the No 1 in a 300 WM, that rifle kicks like mule and it’s heavy, must be the the shape of the stock I’m guessing. The no 1 hits harder than my t3 lite in 300 wsm.

T3 ss with Tupperware 300wsm is what I pack all the time, with a slogan sling you don’t even know it’s on your shoulder, just not pleasant to shoot at the range. Scoped it with leupold, as the bushnell with less eye relief scoped me a couple times taking a quick shot and probably not really holding it nice and firm. The t3 lite to me snaps up and not back, just not pleasant to shoot a half box. But good in griz country.

Off the topic but must add, getting old and wanted to just shoot more so I picked up a t3x ctr in 308, heavy rifle though. Paul made me a muzzle brake, this rifle barely kicks at all, and super accurate, what a joy to shoot. But don’t think I want to pack it in the bush.

Is there any other light rifle that would handle the recoil better then a tikka? I generally make my own kydex type cheek pads with negative comb anyhow. I'm just wondering if there's any other brands that would be better without getting real expensive

I hunted with a custom LH Model 70 in 300 Win Mag for a while. It was in a Brown Pounder and weighed less than 8lbs. Was an absolute drill with 180gr partitions at 3100 FPS. Wish I had that one back.

Yes. I find the x bolts way better in heavy kicking rifles.

I've never shot a T3, so can't comment on it's recoil profile. However, I have shot dozens of .300 WM's, some heavier, some lighter... never found it to be a particularly obnoxious cartridge in any of the rifles I shot. I would have no qualms about building or buying a light .300 WM, and as much as my normal answer to the One-Gun question is .30/06, the .300 WM is much more One-Gun"ier."

All good choices you have here. So many different rifles to chose from, this one kicks more, that one less…

I, say get a 12 gauge and Remington sabot slugs and…Bob’s your uncle ;)

I would go PRC for it's shorter fatter case design. A short 22" carbon alpine contour barrel with a fast twist. Something like the Christensen Ridgeline FFT. Shoot a 181 Hammer, Hornady CX or a Cutting Edge bullet, I'm on the verge of doing something like the FFT up myself. Good luck, have fun.

I think its a fine idea, just won't be pleasant to fire a whole bunch from the bench, but out in the field, it will be just fine. I base this on my Sako A7 in 300wsm. I feel nothing when I shoot it at an animal. In a t shirt, off the bench, its an entirely different matter.

He said he doesnt want to spend much on the project.

I thought the same thing, had a tikka 300wm, 22.5” barrel, McMillan stock, nice and light, easy to pack, shot it, sold it, and thought why the ##### would anyone want only one rifle anyway,

A 270 or 7 RM with properly selected projectiles will handily kill any big game animal in Canada and beat on you a whole lot less. If your primary concern is landing stopping shot on a charging bear then a 7lb 300 win mag that kicks like a mule would likely be at the bottom of my list.

Yes Phil, I know the 270 isn’t legal for bison :)

I've got a Sako A7, TC Pro Hunter, and Browning XBolt Medallion in 300wm. I would put them in that order for comfortable shooting. With the A7 being the best. Not sure why because it should be the opposite with weight involved. I guess the angle of stock changes recoil more than I thought.
