I am looking to start a project for a rifle that is light 6-7 pounds ideally and compact. Thinking a barrel length in the 16-18" category and looking at .308 family of cases.
I want sonthing that's versatile to take large game from 10-200 yards.
I was hoping to keep the budget as low as possible, like 5-700 with optics. Somthing that serves as back/loaner or truck gun. Somthing I don't care to get banged around a bit.
Don't mind buy stuff used to keep it economical, and don't mind a fixer upper but it has to be safe to shoot.
Here is what I have figured so far, and some features I want.
-bolt action of some varity, don't mind using Milsurp but I won't bubba a nice one. Also fine to use a savage rem, etc.
I am open to other actions, I just think for cost/weight/reliability this is my best bet
-short barrel to keep it compact, I would ideally like cut off and re-crown be the only smiting I need.
-would like irons as an option, incase of failure of primary optic.
-optic would be a 1 or 1.5 on the low and 5-8 on the top.
-shorter then average lop both because I am short and to keep it fast and compact.
-I would really like it to be detachable mag.
-accuracy of 2moa or better, I can handload to help this if need be.
-caliber large enough for Canadian big game, but not magnums to keep recoil down.
-finish is not a big deal because I can work with that and it's a working rifle.
Looking for advice on all the above and pics/info to help guide me on this fun little project.
Cheers!
