a remington short action, stainless mountain rifle take off barrel, dropped into a wildcat model 7 pattern stock. Will be just over 5lbs.
This is likely the best route to go.

If I was doing something light it would be on a SA LH Remington 700. It would wear a diminutive 21" barrel and a converted 17 oz wildcat stock with aluminum bottom metal or a blind magazine. You could probably do this if you were careful for less than $1500 and possibly less than $1000. It won't be pretty, but it will be lightish.![]()
Model 70 Shadow series are offered in left hand models, at least they were not that long ago.
The MRC stock is a clubby 30 oz's to start with.
DO IT!!! You won't regret it!!! We own 3....

Not sure why Tikka is out of the question for everyone else.....my left handed best friend has a Stainless LH T3 Lite in .308 and loves his.
You have one helluva budget to work with there.... You could get a T3 and an aftermarket carbon fiber stock for a total cost of about 1900$, and then you'd have another 800$ to spend on glass....
If everyone else wants a non-detachable magazine, could you just superglue a T3 mag in place???

You'll hate my recommendation:
Tikka
I know, it has a detachable mag, but lefty options really bite.
Cheers
A friend needed a recommendation for a left handed rifle.
He wanted:
Stainless
Light
Magazine fed
Available (this was the kicker!)
Wound up a contest between Savage and Tikka, and tikka won on weight. Ruger was in the mix, too, but lost on weight and magazine.
Doesn't hurt that I'm a tikka fan!![]()

why not the tikka? ... first this year is the last year of production .... second there is some plactic parts inside and that is including one on the safety ... third you need to have spare parts due to the 1st and stoeger has never been good on that .... fifth the price asked do not reflect that the t3 is: on the low end of the production maybe a $550 not at $1100 .... sixth i have heard some stories on people loosing in our mountains the magazine ...
guys to take it wrong just my opinion on the t3 ... great barrel but the rest is not worth what they ask for ...

I honestly don't know exactly what the point of this pseudo-English diatribe is.

I think that translates into... one length action pinned to make it a short action, lots of plastic everywhere including safety items like a plastic bolt shroud(enjoy that when you have blowback for any serious reason) and way overpriced for the quality of manufacture but the barrel is accurate...........am I warm?
You missed the fourth, which is what?
Also , bcsteve is about to show his .375 bullet test, how about yours? Too cold in yukon?

Plastic bolt shroud does suck, that is a problem I'll admit. Mountain tactical makes a nice solution....
Plastic Mag - yes. Function? Fine.
I've never heard these hard criticisms of the T3.
For a 750-1000$, it's a damn good gun....

at 550 this is great gun, not at 1100 the price asked nowadays ....
