lightweight rifle for a leftie

If I was doing something light it would be on a SA LH Remington 700. It would wear a diminutive 21" barrel and a converted 17 oz wildcat stock with aluminum bottom metal or a blind magazine. You could probably do this if you were careful for less than $1500 and possibly less than $1000. It won't be pretty, but it will be lightish. :)

Ya, then you'd hunt it for a season at most and sell it cause it's not a M70... :p

Just kidding ya.

Definitely the path of least resistance for a LH that's a true lightweight. At one time I had all the parts on hand to do a 7o8 as you describe, but with a McM Edge. Ended up chickening out and sticking with what I already had, and knew worked for me.

Model 70 Shadow series are offered in left hand models, at least they were not that long ago.

To my knowledge, these were never made. Winchester was never as flexible or open as Ruger is/was to limited runs. Tho they did have the Custom Shop option and turned out some pretty nifty LH M70s from it. Painfully high price on any that I've seen listed...

The MRC stock is a clubby 30 oz's to start with.

That stock was a huge disappointment, IMO.

Not sure why Tikka is out of the question for everyone else.....my left handed best friend has a Stainless LH T3 Lite in .308 and loves his.

You have one helluva budget to work with there.... You could get a T3 and an aftermarket carbon fiber stock for a total cost of about 1900$, and then you'd have another 800$ to spend on glass....

If everyone else wants a non-detachable magazine, could you just superglue a T3 mag in place??? ;)

You'll hate my recommendation:

Tikka :)

I know, it has a detachable mag, but lefty options really bite.

Cheers :)

A friend needed a recommendation for a left handed rifle.

He wanted:

Stainless
Light
Magazine fed
Available (this was the kicker!)

Wound up a contest between Savage and Tikka, and tikka won on weight. Ruger was in the mix, too, but lost on weight and magazine.

Doesn't hurt that I'm a tikka fan! :)

DO IT!!! You won't regret it!!! We own 3....

why not the tikka? ... first this year is the last year of production .... second there is some plactic parts inside and that is including one on the safety ... third you need to have spare parts due to the 1st and stoeger has never been good on that .... fifth the price asked do not reflect that the t3 is: on the low end of the production maybe a $550 not at $1100 .... sixth i have heard some stories on people loosing in our mountains the magazine ...

guys to take it wrong just my opinion on the t3 ... great barrel but the rest is not worth what they ask for ...

I honestly don't know exactly what the point of this pseudo-English diatribe is.

I think that translates into... one length action pinned to make it a short action, lots of plastic everywhere including safety items like a plastic bolt shroud(enjoy that when you have blowback for any serious reason) and way overpriced for the quality of manufacture but the barrel is accurate...........am I warm?

Plastic bolt shroud does suck, that is a problem I'll admit. Mountain tactical makes a nice solution....

Plastic Mag - yes. Function? Fine.

I've never heard these hard criticisms of the T3.

For a 750-1000$, it's a damn good gun....

fourth was about only size action fits all ....

good question on the 9.3x62 bullet test it is a huge task i collected a lot of milk jugs and now started the reloading ... i already published which loads will be used with imr 4064.

all the best.

I absolutely agree with this!

I know I've overpaid for Tikkas, but their feature set is so perfect for me that I've simply put up with it.

I've paid right around $900 for each of my stainless Tikkas, and $800-ish for my blued Tikka.

It's the closed top. When I mount a scope, the gun fits. Eye relief is right, my arms are comfortable, it points, and I like the weight.

It's literally the only long action I can say that about. On a short length of pull rifle, my thumb is hitting my nose. On a regular length of pull long action, I'm craning my neck to see through the scope.

My center fire hunting rifles are:

Tikka T3 Light Stainless 6.5x55
Tikka T3 Light Stainless 300 Win (braked!)
Tikka T3 Battue in 30-06
Weatherby Vanguard was 270, soon 9.3x62
Winchester Extreme Weather 300 win.

The vanguard needed extension rings and the longest eye relief scope I could find. Still didn't fit. I now have an Elite 6500 1.25-8 for it that has enormous eye relief.

The Winchester has a short action for its cartridge length, like a short action Remington 700. The ejection port is shorter than a loaded cartridge. That, a Leupold reversible front base, plus a long scope with long eye relief (Nikon Monarch 3, 2.5-10x42) makes it *just* work.

My Tikkas all wear 2.5-8x36 Leupolds in extra low rings. No screwing around! The flat top puts the holes for the bases in a good spot.

I'm going to take some pictures of this set of relationships one of these days.

I hope the T4, or whatever it is also has a closed top.

Well most everyone skipped over the Savage Weather Warrior 16 FLCSS. It's has a lot of decent features that work. Stainless barrel, Accu stock, Accu trigger; Drop floor plate for quick unloading and Synthetic stock. For a factory production rifle they are good for lefties. A 7mm08 would be a good choice. It also has a tang safety which is good when one is wearing gloves. With a decent scope the 16 FLCSS are acceptably accurate. Keep in mind that one is looking at a 22 inch barrel - so it's possible to get close to full velocity from the cartridge. The weight might be above what the OP has in mind but all in all, one does not have to be in love with a Savage to discover that they shoot well.
