Lightweight rifle ideas

Beautiful rifle! I would argue that the new Mountain Ascent will beat out the majority of custom rifle makers in the weight department as well.

I'm very happy, and indeed it's lighter than even the customs, has a well proven action and is actually an excellent shooter too. I have a full custom titanium (solid ti, not just the receiver but bolt, screws, you name it) on order and it'll finish a pound heavier. The competition is often literally a pound heavier, and on mountains you feel every ounce let alone a pound. This rifle will let me get to the game quicker, and not be panting as hard, overall makes mountain hunting just that much more enjoyable. Will hopefully put it to work on sheep in Aug/Sep.

You mean something like this, 700 Rem Ti 300 WSM, Brown precision 14oz Kevlar stock, PT&G speedlock and alum shroud, Leupold 3-9 compact......................all up loaded 5 lb 15 oz

I have some good money in several different rifles ... I currently own this rifle in 300WSM ... Man is it awesome ! I am personally head over heals in love with the 700 TI in 300wsm. I am about to order a new new stock for it to get the weight down a bit more.

There are rifles slightly lighter than the 700 ti for less money ... but if you can find one I would snatch it up instantly

I will add .. although i'm not a fan of the new Kimbers ... They are a seriously light weight mountain rifle for a good price. If you like them and could get one to shoot good " I have no experience with them so I don't know " It would be pretty high up on the list for me if I was in the market for a mountain rifle. They are pretty available and ready to go on short notice ... Light weight custom could easily take 6 months as we all know.

I've decided to go for the Savage 11 LWH in 7-08. while I may get a Kimber 84M Montana in the long run...the savings allow me to buy premium glass for the Savage. that and I can't find a single bad review on the gun. professionally or otherwise. read through 2 pages worth of review links last night and aside from it not being exactly a 'tack driver', it's all sub-MOA at 100 yards n less.

PS - I've got this friggen crow I've got to kill. it's scared off all the other song birds, no waking and going to bed to something nice, only cawcawcawcaw. I need to buy a pellet gun first...

Ardent if you don't mind me asking who's building you that custom Ti and what will it be chambered in?

Weatherby ultralight in 280 again in a Wildcat (m70 pattern). This one weighed in at 5.25lb but handled and shot unreal.

The M7 in a wildcat is one of my favorites, a standard m7 in a wildcat will be under 5.25lbs. With a little action work, and a alloy shroud you can get them down to 5lb or a hair under. And best of all they are far easier on the piggy bank than most in the same weight class.

Nice taste, and nice rifles double gun, colour me impressed.

pilot2001 & Sun and Steel, it's a Satterlee, he makes Holland & Hollands actions at present, tight stuff. He makes an intermediate length full titanium mauser, only the springs are steel. Mine will be a 7x57 with a Rigby style Express mag for 6 rounds in the mag, will put a stainless Krieger on it turned down as much as I dare, and a nice walnut stock. Won't be a true ultralight on account of the stock, but a weather impervious, beautiful lightweight.

Looking for a rifle that would weigh under 7 pounds with optics, but as light as possible. Short action, 20 inch bbl, 308, must look nice, but shoot even better.
I'd buy a Remington Model Seven CDL in 308 and restock it in a McMillan KS style Edge.

Just checked their website. Not one model is available in 7X57. What is that all about, especially when ten models are available in 8X57 and nine in 9.3X63?

I would have expected a German gunmaker to hold the 7 sacred! :)

because they do the 7x64 instead.......

this may also have played a part
The (former) legal banning of (ex) military service cartridges like the .308 Winchester, 7x57mm, 8x57mm I, 8x57mm IS and the .30-06 Springfield in countries like France and Belgium also promoted acceptance and use of the 7x64mm and the 7x65mm R.

I've visited Satterlees' website before and drooled all over my keyboard...some amazing rifles he offers. I'll look forward to a future thread featuring your new toy.

I will second the standard weatherby ultralight. I have a 270 win that is very light and trim with a normal scope on it. I bought double guns 338-06 and it is an amazing rifle. I bought it for a northern alberta bison hunt. The rifle is balanced perfectly and hits much harder than you would think. The rifles fit me great and the felt recoil is very minimal. Another rifle I would reccomend is the winchester featherweight. Super accurate and tough.

Beautiful rifle you have there double, and scaling that low with a hinged floorplate to boot! Impressive!

The ADL to save weight thing is a myth... in my opinion. You use 3screws instead of two, have a slightly taller mag liner/box, the (usually) steel escutcheon around the front action screw, and the composite mag cover over the magwell. The BDL uses 2screws, and aluminum bottom metal. In my experience they weight virtually the same.

I agree. They are very underrated in the ultralight world. By using the scaled down action, they get away keeping features that most ultralights dump in order to save weight. Which makes for an awesome handling/shooting rifle.
