limitations of basic 'soft points' vs premium bullets....

AAAaaaaaaand John Nosler came to all the same intelllegent conclusions that this thread has re-hashed over 50 years ago, without the internet, or us gumshoes. Under 2800 fps cup and cores behave and work nicely. Over that the projectiles need a little help to keep it together.
Same here, my longest take put a moose down with remmy core lokt in 325 yards with a 30-06 and didnt take another step.
Shot placement is the most important thing.
I just shoot what my gun likes - usually my 7mm Rem Mag., Federal Premium 165gr Game Kings = dead critters, don't care how big or how far within reason. 2000+ ft/lbs @ 400 yds, only 12-13" drop @ 400 when sighted in at a 265 yd zero. I like pretty cartridges too, but I shoots a bit, so 2 and a half bucks per shot is not cheap practice!
my dad has shot over 50 moose and never with a "premium" bullet. always remington corelock either in 180 or 220 gr out of an 06. my uncle i don't even know how many more then that, the same ammo and caliber. by buddies dad has shot everything in bc there is to shoot with a 7x57 including a 10' griz, and with remington corelock/softpoints (non-premium). i guarantee that at the proper yardage and the right shot any of the non-premium ammo will kill what the manufacturers rate it for. i personally shoot partitions because i shoot reloads but don't feel inadequate for hunting hoofed animals with non-premium bullets. just make good ethical shots. if you don't shoot a lot and it makes you feel better then pay the extra $20 per box. also, some of the premium ammo MAY (not guaranteed) shoot better then the lower end ammo.
Where in Canada does that happen for moose hunting?

In northern ON areas, a group of 8 or 9 hunters could have 3 or 4 adult tags, not to mention everyone has a calf tag here. Anyone can fill the adult tags in the group. I know guys that have shot 3 adult moose in one season, as part of a group.

No problem. Scobo didn't give a tme frame for his Dad shoting all those moose, but I will bet it was during the great depression, when people lived on wild meat. Of course, most of the people on here will know nothing of the conditions prevailing in the 1930s.
I have told on here how a fellow shot 30 moose with a 30-30, in about a ten year period. My older brother shot 32 elk and about 6 moose in Saskatchewan, in actually less than ten years! Every district had outstanding hunters and they commonly shot game for other families, who for some reason couldn't, or didn't, get wild meat. 50 moose would be completely logical, and no, there was no such thing as shooting them at night! In case you don't know, a kerosene lantern throws a light for about ten feet! Also, as you might guess, there was considerable hunting pressure and game was not always easy to get.

Dad is 59. he lives for hunting. we were a family of 6. my dad was laid off for a while and we almost lost everything. three tags for our family alone. my mom, myself and him and we always tagged out every year. on top of that back then we were involved in a church where there were not so many well off people who where rookies at hunting so my dad would take them out. our family alone needed a big bull, cow and calf to last our family through the year. infact, don't think i even ate beef until i was over 12 and thought it tasted weird. we used to hang the quarters in our basement outside of my bedroom when it was too cold in the winter to hang them in the garage. these weren't BC moose. things are much better now so he has slowed down on killing. and the actual number now is 58 and counting. his biggest was a 60". but enough about me and bragging about my pa. he shot them all with a 30-06.
