Live Trapping Coyotes

How big is your dog? A German Shepard and larger are more than able to kill a coyote.

Some wire might be your friend.

Don't count on it I watched a guy, a few years back put 2, just bought and trained, Irish wolf hounds on a big male, we advised against it and said wait 10 minutes for our hounds to go with. He knew it all and the dogs cornered this male yote by a brush pile, in about 3 minutes it was over and the guy had to figure out what to do with his now dead new hounds. Never did get the yote. I own a 100lb sheperd and would never let him near a coyote, he simply does not have it in him. A 2 or 3, 40 lb Walkers on the other hand have the brains and the drive to get things done but rarely will they take them on FTF.

I second the pellet gun from inside the door. Mine will penetrate a coon's skull from 20 yds so a yote would think twice even if it didn't drop him. Here Fluffy!!!!!

A 100 lb dog that can't take a coyote is worthless.

We had a just over 70lb Shepard-X ##### that had a serious hate-on for coyotes, she demolished plenty of them. We also had a 120lb Pyrenees-X male, he wasn't fast enough to catch them, but he seemed to delight in finding their dens, which of course brought 2 grown coyotes out, he was never the worse for wear.

We have 2 dogs now, there used to be a coyote that would come in the middle of the night and howl just outside the fence teasing them. On night I forgot to close the gate and that coyote never came back, I assumed he found someplace else to be.

Now some dog breeds are just a snack for a coyote.

Most pet dogs don't have the drive to fight to the death with a big coyotes.some Running hounds will kill on sight. Both not to many will.

Can't say I buy that. Grew up on a commercial chicken farm and we had a Rottweiler / retriever mutt, yea the neighbours dog got out... Anyhow he killed several coyotes over his 8 years and did his best to get more. It wasn't a fair fight, and he wasn't a mean dog. He just didn't like coyotes. He got his ears bit, and his mouth, but nothing that required a vet and he always seemed pleased with himself.

I'll be the first to admit my Shepard is a suck, would protect the wife to the death I have no doubt, but I have seen our 10 lb chihuahua put him in a corner or take on a coon while the big guy watches. I have seen a lot of dogs and some hunt some don't. the old man had a Blue tick hound that would kill anything that walked but was the most mild mannered dog other wise. The wolfhounds were a $5K lesson for someone that thought money bought a hunting dog

A lot of neighbors around, are they like minded, safe back drop? Any idea what's keeping them around, pet food outside, compost, neighbors feeding them? You could try scaring them, might work but your probably within 30 yards or less...
Lost a beagle about 25 years ago to coyotes, he made it home but that was it...I hope he got his licks in. My father went out and bought a walker fox the next week, we chased coyotes hard for the next 5/6 years(She really didn't like coyote). I only put this here because I can still feel what it was like to loose a pet that way. I know what I'd do, if the area was safe for it.

I'm struggling with this, Irish wolfhounds are 120lb+ dogs and there was a pair of them. They're purpose bred wolf hunting dogs to boot. Just one substantially smaller dog makes it look rather like a game. I could see a coyote turning uncommitted dogs but killing two very big purpose bred wolf hunting dogs... You don't have an ocean front property in Arizona to sell me do you? ;)

I don't believe that the modern Irish wolfhound was purpose breed to hunt wolves. If my memory is correct I believe the breed came about at the end of the 18th century as attempt by a British officer to reestablish the extinct breed of Irish wolfhound called the cu. I think there's a lot of mastiff, Great Dane and sight hound blood in the breed. I don't think I've read of them being used to hunt wolves (I could be wrong). I did see a video of one hunting wild pigs in Australia. Just an interesting but of info. I agree with you that it would be surprising to see a coyote kill two of them.

Not the first time I have been called, don't care I have big shoulders, on this but 25 years ago in Ontario coyotes were scarce and the ones that were here were big. Saw it with my own eyes so believe what you want.
My personal opinion is the guy got sold a couple dogs from the US believing they were the real deal and it turned out they were not. I know of a bunch two weeks ago had to vet 3 Walkers to the tune of almost a grand, as they were pretty much chewed by a wounded one they cornered and the dogs backed off to let someone finish the job. Some dogs can, most dogs can't or shouldn't be tangling with a coyote IMO.
Now my question to the western boys, how big do your coyotes get size wise, We get males in the 50 lb range regularly and yes they have been put on a lie detector(scale)

Too bad you can't use a firearm. A .22 with subsonic ammo, fired from in the house, would make no noise at all. Where I lived before, I used them to routinely kill gophers in the garden. One day, my neighbour was on her deck hanging laundry when I got one. She never heard anything until I went to pick it up. She was thankful for getting rid of them.

40 lbs would be a big one.

Coyotes are getting much less common around here, wolves have greatly increased the last 10 years.

Interesting info, thanks for that.

In fairness our coyotes are 25-40lbs, the further south you go the smaller they are. The ones on our chicken farm would have been at the light end of the spectrum. I'll accept the story as plenty of bizarre things have happened here that are hard to describe.

30 years ago I was living on a farm and had a black and tan coonhound named "Duchess." She was a timid dog and had been abused, I paid the owner $200 just to get her away from the A-Hole... well that "timid" little coonhound, killed half a dozen coyotes in the barnyard over the three years I had her. By the time I had her fattened back up, she was a whopping 60 pounds soak and wet... she did have battle wounds from those fracas's, but she took care of her own vet work and was none the worse for wear after a week or two.
