LMT CQB16 Vs, PWS MK116

Hi guys,

looking to buy my first AR type (first firearm as well). I have shot a number of ARs, and I found these two on Questar and ina display cases at a range.

The LMT looks like it has great components, but the PWS has a lot of the Magpul additions I would want to add to the LMT.

As a first AR, does anyone have any input on which would be better? Use is target shooting.

Humm, tough choice. For target shooting, both will do fine but I would pick the PWS. You get a better charging handle, better sights and a very nice compensator.

One more detail with the LMT:

Defender lower half with SOPMOD Stock (Stock is fully functional but rifle is exported with non-adjustable extension tube to meet US State Department Export Restrictions)

As a first AR, I would get the DI gas system on the LMT. The Piston-type system in the PWS is more of a personal choice best made after you have tried a DI gun which is the go-to standard for the AR15.
 
Wow! Tough choice! I have both of the guns you mention and I really like both. If forced to get rid of one I would probably end up keeping the PWS. ( I think!)




PS: you do understand it's not a question of which one, but which one first, right?:D
 
I assume you're talking about the LMT MRP version right? If so, you can't beat the quick change barrel system, not to mention quick change calibers and FACTORY conversion from DI to Piston. It's also worth mentioning that LMT cares a great deal about their Canadian customers, I had a minor warranty issue and I got contacted directly by LMT. Amazing customer service by both LMT and Questar.

Of course my opinion is biased because I'm an LMT owner, but these are two things worth noting when it comes to decision time.

Oh I forgot It's also worth mentioning the monolithic upper, really nice on the LMT, durable, solid, and ascetically pleasing.
 
Get a basic gun to start and use the savings to buy:
1) Ammunition
2) Training
3 Optics
4) Reloading gear

Save the blinged out kit for those that want to parade in front of a mirror because they can't afford to shoot...
 
Things to think about.

1. LMT only ships the 'non working' stock and 'compliant' barrels (no flash hider) on their guns now. PWS uses a standard AR15 barrel so you can always get a new one in Canada. The CQB/MRP is stuck using the LMT barrels, you'll also have to retrofit a milspec buffer tube to have the stock function properly, add cost of having flashhider put on.

2. PWS comes with enhanced buffer tube to help mitigate effects of carrier tilt, LMT doesn't so you either have to buy the special buffer or retrofit a PWS Enhanced Buffer Tube at your cost.

3. LMT does not come with folding BUIS so once again if you like those, you'll have to buy the. PWS comes with BUPS (back up plastic sights!). I would put on Troys myself.

4. If you like a QD sling swivel on your stock you'll need to replace the MOE on the PWS with a CTR, or just use one of the holes on the EBT. LMT's stock has the hole for swivel.
 
Also, neither of the firearms mentioned are "blinged out kit". They are both upper end AR's with a great reputation for quality and customer service. Yes, you can buy cheaper AR's. You are however getting some very functional features in a high quality firearm with either of the above.

Right, point being is that there are a fair amount of other options out there that would save a new shooter close to a $1000 for ammo and training...and are as every bit as reliable and accurate. (as always ymmv)

Well the OP already picked these two models to choose from so perhaps he's got the money for ammo aswell. ;) No harm in buying quality over quantity.

The PWS rifle have a QD socket in the buffer tube. No need to upgrade the stock unless you want something different.

To Beltfed: Yes, you can always buy a basic M4 and lose a lot of money reselling it or spend as twice as much upgrading it to the same level of the LMT and PWS.

Buy once, cry once. Both are great rifles that will last you forever.
 
This was my point as well. If the OP is hard up for cash, he probably wouldn't be looking at higher end guns. He wasn't asking if he should get a Norinco. He was asking an opinion between 2 rifles. Had he had asked if a Norinco was a good cheap way to get into the AR game, I would have encouraged him to get a Norinco.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all of the responses.

As some have pointed out, I wasn't looking for the cheapest way to get in. I am buying this firearm to keep for a long time. I want somethig reliable, something that shoots well, and something that makes my man gene feel good when I see it and shoot it. I am not mil or LE so, this is purely for enjoyment of the sport.

Both rifles sound like they would do the job.

The only draw back I see to the LMT is the fixed extension tube and the "compliant" barrell (also, can only replace wit LMT barell).

In the end, I think based on my research so far I like the LMT, and seeing as I am dropping $2k on a rifle, if I end up spendig a few hundred bucks on upgrading it with the proper extension tube and a compensator, not a big deal.

You can find a carbine lenth 6 pos adjustable for under $100. It's an easy fix. As for the barrel, you will need to thread the muzzle and pick a flash hider of your choice.

The suggestion that you loose more money or have to do any upgrades on a basic carbine is nonsense.
To the OP: Buy whatever floats your boat just don't believe the hype you need to spend this much on a quality AR.

You never did mention the type or discipline of shooting you are planning...
