So I purchased a LMT LM308 MWSE and I'm wondering if I should try something other than an Elcan Spectre DR 7.62 1.5-6X optic. I run the Spectre DR's on all of my rifles with no compliants, but maybe it's time to look at other options. So here's the criteria for my optic needs.

It needs to be capable of a beating without losing zero and have good glass.
I want an illuminated crosshair/ chevron/ dot, and either a long battery life or tritium.
I want to be able to go from long range to CQB with little or no effort ( I've even considered a reflex RD on top or side of a magnified optic).
I would prefer at least 6X magnification and be either PVS14 or PVS22 compatible.
I want to keep the weight down ( hence the move from the Spectre DR)
I can purchase a Spectre DR 1.5-6X for around $2600 (taxes in), so that's my budget.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, and pics of optic set ups are appreciated as well.

I thought about it, I would prefer more magnification and they seem a bit delicate for running a tactical course.

Really???

I've heard lots about S&B, but being called delicate is something new...... Lots of hard users swear by them in war zones.

I know a sniper in Finland that only uses S&B. He's played around with the 1-8 that's coming, and I think it's gonna be around your price range as well.

While the Leupold and Premier are nice as well, I think they're well into the $3k+ range.

Don't get me wrong, I made the comment on the S&B based on a visual comparison to my Elcans. I did like the Leupold ( the 7.62 version is good) and I also looked at the Leuplod HAMR as well. I like the HAMR but I wish they had a 6x or better that compensates for 7.62. Thanks for the info so far, links to products are great as well.

Appreciate it.

March 1-10x24 is exactly what you are looking for.

Buy it if you don't like it sell it in the ee it will go quick

Virtually every suggestion thus far has been at least as much as the SpectreDR 1.5-6x

The only thing that fits that description is the Swarovski Z6i 1-6x w/ illum... The Bushnell 6500 1-6x doesn't have the glass or the reticle to compare (nor is the 1x nearly as close to 1x).

If you're wishing, might as well ask for the Leupold CQBSS 1.1-8x w/ H27 reticle.

I don't think you should get too hung up on the weight though. While the Elcan's aren't lightweight, when you take a good piece of glass and add the LaRue (most likely) mount, the weight differences aren't that big.

First of all, how are you going to use your MWS?

If you use it like a "battle rifle" for 0-600m work on torso sized targets - I consider either the Elcan(DR or the FIST sight) or the ACOG TA11 will be a good choice. (seriously, they are the only games in combat sight, field proven) If you are feeding non-match ammo, it is a 1.5 to 2.5MOA rifle. You are really looking at 600m torso hits, just like the AR in service rifle. Also, the MWS is not exactly light, so you may want to look up the weight spec.

If you are using it like a DMR, and there are the match ammo to use it to full accuracy potential, it makes sense to have a traditional scope. That will allows you to adjust for wind and elevation to get the precision you need to shoot the more extended range. Seriously, unless you have access to a military range (with the local provincial rifle association)or a 1000m field range that allows restricted(unlikely), this scenario is a bit hard to get.

If you're willing to up your price by a hair, the 6x ACOG is a great choice. I had one for my MWSE. Never got to shoot it before I sold the MWSE, but I still do have the 6x ACOG (in the EE).

Great optic. Crystal clear, and capable of CQB shooting with both eyes open. It works.

I have two LMT AR's in 5.56, I have a NF NXS 2.5 - 10 X 24 with the FC-2 reticle, which is bascially a red dot with a circle reticle. It is mounted in an ADM Recon mount sitting on my 16".
The scope is very well made, it's compact and is an excellent optic in my opinion, and it's well within your budget.
At 2.5X it can be used for reasonably close ranges with both eyes open, and at 10X I can group nicely at 100 and 200 yards.
The US military have field tested this scope a fair bit, so it must stand up to abuse well.

I have an ACOG TA31F on my 10.5", as mentioned above these are built like tanks and have performed very well in harsh environments. However, the fixed 4X has me looking/thinking of going to variable power scope, at first I was thinking of getting a 1 X 4 NF, or a 1 X 4 Trijicon, however top on my list now is an Elcan Spector 1 - 4 DR!!!

SpectreDR in 7.62 with the piggy back red dot or the S&B again with a piggy back red dot. All the rest are in the "Alright" catagory.

I have had a Doc optic on a TA31 for years - still beat the weight of a NF + Larue mount by half a pound.

I like the Elcan Spectra, but Armament tech is giving us the civie version - the 300 to 800m harsh lines in the "civie version" are much thicker than the brown SOPMOD one. It is more difficult to engage the 500m target with it than the ACOG. The ACOG is much finer and obscure way less target.

The piggy back red dots are too slow to use (who wants two different cheek welds on one rifle?), you realistically shouldn't need it with the 1x/4x throw lever nor the 1-4x S&B Short Dot.

If anything, a 45 degree offset red dot/iron sights are useful and still very fast.

After looking at all my options I'm still sold on the Elcan 1.5-6X.
I had a look at the S&B short dot as well, but it will have to be for my next build as it's not available in 1-8 as of yet.
