I'm not really much of a "precision shooter" any more, as my eyes simply won't do the necessary work after double cataract surgery. That said, I'm a sucker for accurate rifles and right or wrong, I tend to put my faith in what professional military forces are using at any given time. I've long known that .308/7.62mm ARs are inherently accurate, starting with my own minty Artillerie Inrichtingen AR-10 that the government of Canada saw fit to prohibit. Next up was an Armalite AR10 with a 16" barrel that performed much better than my expectations. So when it came time to decide on a factory platform for accuracy, I looked into the various AR platforms. One name stood out from the crowd these days, and Lewis Machine and Tool became a serious contender with their win for the British and NZ DMR programs. Knights also makes a top-tier sniper/DMR, however the base rifle at $6K was just a bit too rich for my blood. The LMT MWS at $4K was a bit more reasonable.....

I added a Vortex 1-6X Razor HD II DMR scope, Geiselle trigger, 20" Stainless 1/11.5" Match barrel, Atlas Bipod and Law Tactical AR-folding stock mechanism to bring the rifle up to my liking. Early on with the 16" Chrome-lined barrel, I was able to print consistent MOA 5-round groups at 100 yds. I don't know how much better the SS Match barrel will perform, as I just received it from Questar and have yet to hit the range. Next Spring will tell the tale of the new barrel..... Meanwhile, here are some pics of the rig:

Enjoy!

One other thing, your eyes might be shot, but clearly you've still got some muscle !
I had a lighter scope on my mws/20" ss, and it was still a heck of an anchor !

@ntm,

Thanks for the load recipe! My standing "old school" favorite has been 38.8 gr of IMR 3031 under a Sierra 168gr HPBTM Matchking in Winchester brass with a CCI BR/match primer. That load printed consistent 5-round cloverleaves @ 100m out of my Rem 700 PSS off a bench back in the 1990s and early 2000s. That rifle is silly accurate, but I am pretty sure that the LMT MWS will give it a run for the money with the 20" SS barrel installed. We shall see come spring 2016!

My remaining muscle is all up top (some would say all in my head!), now that I am confined to a wheelchair. I lost both of my legs above the knees to an IED back in 2008 in A'stan, so all of my shooting is now (regrettably) from the bench. It is a shame to not be able to put my rifles through their practical paces any more, but what's a fella to do? I will just continue to enjoy the shooting sports to the extent possible for as long as possible. Got to keep on keeping on as best we can, right? Let's just hope that the new gov't will leave well enough alone when it comes to the continued use of firearms for sporting purposes in Canada. I paid a hefty price for the freedoms that we enjoy, and it would piss me off to no end if the Liberals were to #### around (more) with my favorite hobby.....

Cheers,

Cheers,

I'd like to thank you for your service.

Bartok5, thank you for your service.

Your MWS looks great! Is the color Burnt Bronze?
I currently have the Magpul PRS stock on my MWS. How are you liking the Law Tactical folding mechanism? Does it lock up solid? Are there any Canadian dealers stocking them?

Cheers!

You are (All) very welcome for my service and I thank you in return for yours (eg. Barney)! And thank-you for the very kind compliments regarding my shiny new rifle. The color is indeed Burnt Bronze Ceracote. It is a factory-applied finish as a limited edition - apparently the only one that Questar brought into Canada which is kind of cool. I like the color, because up close it has a metallic sheen but from across the room it just looks like drab brown.

The Law Tactical folder works great and locks up very tight. You can adjust the tension so that it is stiff to open (but stays folded) versus loose and floppy. The only down-side to the folder is the ridiculous price! You really pay a premium for the nice (but definitely not necessary) ability to save 8" or so in length by folding an AR's action. I got mine through CTCS on a pre-order through Ranier Arms. It took approx. 5 months to get because production is so backlogged in the U.S. I believe that One Shot Tactical was also going to bring them in. I guess our U.S. cousins are buying them faster than the factory can pump ém out down South. Unfortunately, the exchange rate on our dollar really drives up the already steep price for what is basically a steel hinge. The inventor and his business partners must be making a real killing!! I really like it now that I have it, but probably wouldn't order another at the premium price we Canucks have to pay....

Cheers,

Mark

Bartok5,
Thanks for the reply. I hear you about the exchange rate and the crazy difference in prices in Canada vs the US. I work in the US for a good part of the year and shake my head almost every time I go into a gun store.

Hello Fellas,

It has been a few months since my original post, so I thought that an update might be of interest to those who dabble in precision semi-auto rifles. The most obvious change at first glance is the optic, however the most important upgrade is arguably the arrival of the 20" Stainless Match Barrel. Regarding the optic, the Vortex Razor HD II 1-6x that I had originally mounted on the MWS is a truly excellent scope, ideal for engaging targets of opportunity from CQB to medium range. That's what makes the 1-6x Razor the optic of choice for many professional 3-gun competitors. That said, I am more interested in wringing maximum accuracy out of my MWS right now, and to do that I found that I need more magnification. After a metric ton of reading and watching You-Tube reviews I finally settled on the Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x 50 Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) scope with the G2 Reticle. There are many good reasons to select this scope, not the least of which is its comparatively compact size and full range of features at a competitive price point ($1200 USD street price, $1700 CAD). There are many other contenders for the same or a bit more money from the likes of Nightforce, Leupold, etc. That said, according to my research none of the others provides the same host of features and capabilities for the money. We could discuss scope selection all day and still never come to the same conclusion, so I will just leave it at that. I am very impressed with the Bushnell for all the same reasons stated in the various reviews - the glass quality, First Focal plane, generous eye relief, simple reticle, tactile and locking turrets, etc. I have it mounted in ATRS 34mm Extra Tall Rings and fitted with a Vortex level and a Switchview magnification throw-lever. The Vortex Razor HD II optic that I had mounted on the MWS has now found a new home on my SIG MCX carbine, producing a very nice set-up there as well.

I have yet to shoot the 20" Stainless Match barrel, but will hopefully sort that out with a trip to the local indoor range next week. Unfortunately it is only a 40 yard rifle range, but it will at least get me on paper in preparation for the outdoor range later this spring. My Chrome-lined 16" barrel produces 5-round clover-leaves @ 40 yards (~1MOA @ 100 yds), so I am anticipating a singe 5-round hole from the 20" Stainless Match barrel using Hornady 168gr and/or 178gr Match ammo.

Enough chit-chat, here are some pics of the current set-up. Enjoy!
