Well...I'm stoked! I finally got to load a few actual rounds today in 9mm Luger. This is the very first time that I have ever loaded a centerfire cartridge of any caliber! That's right, I'm a total NOOB!! Bare with me...

As some of you may already know, I was unable to locate small pistol primers anywhere...As it turns out, there are some very good sponsors here at CGN and I managed to find what I need in the way of components after all. I don't have the bullets on hand yet that I intend to load with BUT I do have a box of 100 Hornady HP/XTP 124gr. from a previous purchase, so I loaded with that for now.

I loaded the following :

5 rounds
Brass : Remington (new)
Primer : Federal small pistol
Powder : Hodgdon HP-38 (4.2gr)
Bullet : Hornady 124gr. (.355" dia) HP/XTP
OAL : 1.100"

5 rounds
Brass : Remington (new)
Primer : Federal small pistol
Powder : Hodgdon HP-38 (4.3gr)
Bullet : Hornady 124gr. (.355" dia) HP/XTP
OAL : 1.100"

5 rounds
Brass : Remington (new)
Primer : Federal small pistol
Powder : Hodgdon HP-38 (4.4gr)
Bullet : Hornady 124gr. (.355" dia) HP/XTP
OAL : 1.100"

The only thing that will change in regards to components in the near future is that I will be swapping the Hornady 9mm 124gr. (.355") HP/XTP bullets for Aim Projectiles 9mm 124gr (.356") RN CMJ bullets.

So....Being a loading virgin and even though I've gone through all of this before, I would appreciate YOUR input in regards to my load recipes above. I can't get to the range for a day or two but I intend to test these 15 rounds A.S.A.P. in my Norinco M213 (unless somebody here tells me that they are dangerous loads). I had asked this question one time before and got quite a few mixed signals. Some said that the loads were too hot and others said that they were just fine...None of my reloading manuals show load data for the Hornady bullet that I have on hand and I do not have access to reloading software (yet). Perhaps I am simply being overally cautious...This is all so new to me. Having said that, I am simply LOVING this new hobby! I'm excited, can you tell?

In a week I will (if I don't already) have the following on hand to load with :
- 400 Remington unprimed 9mm Luger brass
- 2000 Federal small pistol primers
- 1000 Remington small pistol primers
- 2lbs Hodgdon HP-38 powder
- 1lb Bullseye powder
- 75 Hornady 9mm 124gr. HP/XTP bullets
- 1000 Aim Projectiles 9mm 124gr. RN CMJ bullets

Any and all 9mm Luger load data is appreciated (especially if it uses the materials I have on hand). ;) Feel free to share you recipes... :D

Now I do have a few questions...They are as follow :

  1. Are load recipes generally refered to as load data (such a stupid question)?
  2. Does anyone see anything dangerous in my load recipes above?
  3. Is it generally mandatory to tumble used brass before reloading with it?

Lastly, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people here that were able to provide the components that I had such a difficult time finding. Furthermore, in both cases the transactions were done via email and I received very prompt replies, excellent prices, honest and straight forward information and sound advice! Thank you!

What's to see?

RCBS Rock Chucker single stage...All of my equipment is green except for the Hornady powder measure and the LEE dies.

What do you wanna see? LoL

P.S. I love the tree hugger comment in your signature! LOL

Just looking through the Hodgdon's website, I feel that my loads look reasonable (perhaps a little on the light side). Here are some of Hodgdon's published load data :

Bullet Weight (Gr.) : 115 GR. SPR GDHP
Manufacturer Powder : Hodgdon HP-38
Diam.: .355"
OAL : 1.125"
Powder Grs : 4.7 - 5.1
Pressure : 25,300 CUP - 28,100 CUP

Bullet Weight (Gr.) : 125 GR. SIE FMJ
Manufacturer Powder : Hodgdon HP-38
Diam.: .355"
OAL : 1.090"
Powder Grs : 4.4 - 4.8
Pressure : 24,600 CUP - 28,800 CUP

Bullet Weight (Gr.) : 130 GR. SIE FMJ
Manufacturer Powder : Hodgdon HP-38
Diam.: .355"
OAL : 1.120"
Powder Grs : 4.3 - 4.6
Pressure : 25,300 CUP - 28,300 CUP

Probably want to load more than 5 of each, maybe 2 magazines full. You need to be sure they cycle the action, and see how far they eject. If they cause stovepipes, too light, if the brass is in the next area code, too hot.

I don't see how it would be beneficial to view pictures of my setup when all I am asking for is some load data advice...Sheeeesh. Wanna see my pickle pouch to? :runaway:

LoL...

Good advice...I appreciate it! Cheers!!

Now to the range, for that first apprehensive shot. Will it blow up? Will it go click?
Ah the things that sail through your head that first time. Was the scale/measure set right? Did I double charge?

:D:D

If you were paying attention, as reloaders must, they will go bang just fine, and you will be set off in a new and enjoyable hobby.

Also, bear in mind, the Norinco M213, is as far as I've heard, a very strong action. It was designed for the higher pressure 7.62x25 cartridge. This gives you a good safety margin, with this gun. Remember when you are loading for another gun, the action may not tolerate loads that the M213 will. Of course, that's only what I gather from reading, not based on any actual experience, I've never even loaded for 9x19. Just had the 9mm cases get stuck in my 44 and 45 cases

Fear not 32-20, I was just pulling your chain. I'm sure your loads will do fine.
How about some pics of the first groups?

Ha! Ha! Call me a chickensh*t but I'll probably be too fearfull of an exploding pistol to be too interested in placing the shots with any degree of accuracy. Remember, this is my first time...LoL

By the way, I sort of figured that you were goofing off...LoL...It's why I was goofing back. :p

Actually, I was remembering my first loads, near forty years ago for my 30-30. They were made with a Lee loader, the hammer type, and cast lead bullets I made myself too.
No, accuracy wasn't great, but it improved rapidly, with experience, and tons of cheap shooting.

I remember loading for my first time, was so nervous of making a mistake I triple checked everything.

Yeah...Tell me about it! I'm in the process of getting ready to load 5-15 more of each as loaded above and I'm actually weighing the friggen brass...LoL...Like I'm making some sort of super sniper match ammo or something...Geeeze...I might be getting a little carried away here...

Somebody stop me! LoL

props to Dinsdale :D

Shaweeeet! Good post Onagoth...Indeed props to dinsdale!! Good info! Just what I was lookin' for! Cheers!

If memory serves, I believe that I was told that Winchester 231 is the same as Hodgdon's HP38...These are the EXACT same components (minus primers) that I will be using right down to the same OAL...Good post! Good post!
