Can anyone offer any insight to loading lead/cast bullets for use in a Semi-automatic? (AR platform and M14). I found some 30cal 165gr cast bullets(w/ gas check) that I'd like to use for plinking.

I built a dummy round to see if they would feed, and seems they will. Being a round nose, its pretty visible the lead that is getting sheered off by the feed ramps. But several cycles (hitting the bolt catch) with both rifles, and not a hiccup.

My other concern is velocity, from what I gather, trying to shoot lead bullets at normal (2500fps+) .308 velocities might not end so well. So with that being said, does anyone have any recommendations for a powder and charge that would produce sufficiency low velocities as to be safe, but that use enough powder to generate the gas volume to cycle a semi-automatic action?

From reading the "45-70 Reduced" thread, seem Unique might be an option.

I have the lyman cast bullet book here right now.

Whats the dia. of the bullet 308 309 310. Round nose or spire point.

Can give you Lyman data from their new book. I load 200 grain cast gas checked 30 cal from bullet barn .

Lyman 48th Edition pages 216 to 219 cover the area.

I shoot 170 round nose with a gas check and 18 grains of unique shot gun powder. With a light cheap load like that you don't get leading in the barrel. I don't think your gun will cycle properly with loads like these and if you speed them up I think you will end up with alot of lead in the barrel.

Thanks!!!

some good info here
That was exactly what I was looking for!!! Awesome, thanks!

The bullets I picked up are 165gr, and according to my calipers: .0308 (5)" in diameter.

I loaded up 3 with 30.0gr of Varget, I'll put them through tomorrow and see how they cycle. Not looking for an accuracy load, so for now if they cycle, I'm happy as a pig in ####.
