Lobbying for handgun hunting

all I hunt is Grouse. And I would LOVE to be able to do so with 22 LR pistols, it would be the best hunt ever and even lighter. I know the fear will be making sure that the handgun/power is enough to cleanly kill an animal so that it does not suffer. same reason they have caliber limits on bigger game and whatnot.

But I would be for it.

This is the main reason the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters is useless. They completely sold us handgunners down the river when Bill C-68 came out. They also did nothing to stop them from stopping handgun hunting which was legal at one point in Ontario. They just seem to roll over. They will never get my membership again until handgun hunting being reinstated is in the top 3 things on their priority list.

I'm for Handgun hunting! Never hunted... but if I ever wanted to, I'd like to know the option existed. Sign me up!

I would love to hunt with a hangun! In fact i wouldnt hesitate to sell some of my rifles to buy more handguns if i could use them for hunting.

i just wish to carry a .22 to scare off those stupid red squirrels that dont shut up when im hunting deer and maybe for the odd rabbit that runs by while i only have a .308 in hand lol

Myself I see alot of parallels with archery hunting and handgun hunting.
Both tools require, no demand, that the hunter must be closer to the game animal to be truly effective. If done right, with enough energy delivered at the correct spot terminally, both are ethical means of harvest IMHO.

There are a couple of differnet issues here, somewhat related, but different.

Concealed carry is something that I believe in, and would very much like to see again in Canada.

Same with HGH. It was once allowed, and I would like to see it return.

However, while both obviously involve handguns, they require a bit different equipment.
A CCW pistol would be on the smaller side, while a HGH pistol is going to be larger. And likely scope equiped. (this is for hunting big game. I would also welcome the chance to carry a small .22 for finishing off game taken with a rifle. I once made the mistake of putting a big game rifle to the back of the head of a deer I had downed. What a mess!) So I dont see the direct tie-in that some here are hinting at.
Having said that, if we can show that we are trustwothy in one aspect, then it may well make future fights easier.

More importantly, if we get one victory, it will inspire others to try and take on other gun issues.

If enough people are interested, we need to start an official petition. Does anyone know how to go about that. It would be great if Gun Nutz created one that all could fill out on line.

I've been working on this for a while, as has our local fish and game club. This year we finally got a resolution together that had the support of the Alberta Fish and Game Association at the provincial level. We have asked the province to remove the restriction on hunting with revolvers and pistols. If we could get the province to actually do that, then we could start arguing with the Chief Firearms Officer to start issuing permits. However right now at least in Alberta all we hear about is that we cannot hunt with them anyway.

We need to pressure the provinces using local hunting groups first. Then work on CFO's next. Those in New Brunswick have a head start, they can start in on the CFO now.

We have to hit up all levels of bureaucracy, all across Canada. We need to show them that there is a large group of VOCAL citizens that demand to be heard, and we need to remind them continually that we are an organized group that will not go away.

Over the last several years I have been in discussions with CPC MP's and many influential CPC party members if there is going to be a push for any handgun rights after the CPC have a majority expect it to be for defense rights which would include CCW.

We still have a lot of work cut out for us when it comes to handgun hunting though many CPC MP's have a fear of handguns in the bush and this includes the ones that hunt with rifles/shotguns we just need to teach them the errors of their ways.

If I could CCW here I would carry either a 4.25" barreled Glock 29 10mm or a S&W 5" barreled 5 shot model 60-18 in 357mag.

For hunting I would use these same guns and would not hesitate to hunt out to 50 yards with them but I would more likely carry my 5.5" barreled Ruger Bisley Vaquero's in 45 Colt or my 4.25" Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull.

I have two T/C Contender carbines so would just get pistol grips and shorter barrels these would be in cartridges like 6.8spc/309JDJ/375JDJ/45 Colt/45-70...

Oh yeah I would hunt with a handgun... :D

Nova Scotia here, protection a good reason to be able to carry a 22 handgun. Last night there was a coyote 50' from us and he would not move... it was a bit scary, we didnt have anything at all for protection. Where do I start to try and get our laws changed?

You must start with the provinces. If even one province allows HG hunting, it will be a strong move for us. The feds will then need to work with the province on the matter.

Start with the big provincial wildlife/hunting org. BCWF, OFAH, etc.

OK, so it looks like you have more than a few in agreement with you Mike. So start organizing a strategy and let us all know what we can do to help. Perhaps it would be wise to assign different people to oversee a specific strategy for each province.

I've asked one of the moderators from gun nutz to set up a petition that we could all sign; that will start on the federal level. Now for the provincial level, we all need to write the Ministry of Environment (or the provincial equal) and absolutely inundate them with letters. Write a form letter that you can, as an individual, change slightly, and re-send multiple times. The same needs to be done for your MP as well. The squeaky wheels do get the oil.

Dmitri, he needs our help now... rather WE need our help now. If we're gonna get this ball rolling, we all need to take a pro-active part in this.

I, for one, will be writing letters to my MLA, the Natural Resources Minister and the CFO of NB and will be encouraging all my fellow shooters to do the same.

I dont want to rain on your good efforts, but I doubt that petitions do much good. Political types feel that anybody can sign a petition, but few take the time to write a real letter. (not a form letter)
So, if you do write a real letter, it gets far more notice.

Next, as Scar270 and CanAm noted above, we need to put pressure on the hunting department of each province.

This is a letter I sumbitted a whie back when BC was asking what changes could be made to increase hunter numbers.

Thank you for inviting comments from the public. This is true democracy at work.
As a hunter, I welcome the opportunity to comment.

I am comfortable with the current pricing structure for resident permits, although the new hunter and under age 18 are welcome.

I would like to see a separate muzzle loader season re-introduced. I used to take part in the muzzle-loader season (one week prior to centrefire) back when you had it.

For small game, and upland game birds, could you have a reciprocal deal with other provinces, where if I have a BC license, I can hunt in Alberta, and vise versa?

Could the CORE course be a high school elective subject? As such, there would be no cost for the course itself (although the license fee would still apply)

I would very much like to see a handgun hunting season introduced. Yes, I am well aware that Federal law would have to be changed to allow the carrying of a handgun in the bush. Perhaps start with single shot only handguns (“wrist rifles”) such as the Thompson Center Contender. In spite of what some un-informed will say, HGH is very possible, and many countries have a HGH program.

No doubt you will hear from many that say we should not have any hunting at all. Be sure to ask them if they are willing to put their money where their mouth is. In other words, are they willing to accept a $50 Outdoors fee, simply to go hiking or wildlife photographing, in order to make up the loss of hunting revenue? It is easy to say others should give up something, the real test is how much is someone willing to give up themselves.
