Locking antlers

This seems to happen often enough, youtube is flooded with these videos.
Two deer locking antlers while sparring. Then eventually starving to death, or getting eaten, as seen in vid #2.

Seems like a faulty design to me. There are plenty of other species that butt heads, but don't get tangled.
Is there a reason why their antlers are shaped so tangly? A reason that maybe outweighs the once-in-a-while death?

You'd think they'd evolve some better hats by now :rolleyes:

And where are all the hippie animal lovers when someone has to wade in to untangle a couple of deer? It would appear that those bloodthirsty hunters are perhaps more compassionate than we realized!
