Locking Necro Threads Question

Why are old threads now being locked when they are opened up again? What's wrong with further discussion?

https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/threads/remington-788-in-270.454876/
Will take the points made in this thread under advisement for the future, since I was the mod that closed that particular necro thread.

One reason on that particular one though, is really has anyone here ever seen a factory Rem 788 chambered in .270? 🤪 Turned out the OP of the thread was actually talking about a Rem 770. Completely different animal. Then the person who activated/bumped the necro thread posted they were going to re-barrel their Rem 788 to 22 CM. Also a completely different animal from the original thread. That OP should've started a new thread on the re-barrel of a Rem 788 to 22 CM for further discussion if anyone wanted to wade in. There was a complete disconnect between the original thread and the new discussion post on it. There you go.

Cheers.

Something else regarding necro threads, use the thread referenced in the original post.

Sure would be nice to see more of those....

I prefer the operating system I have seen on many other forums, where attempting to post in a necro-thread is not expressly forbidden...but you will get a warning that #####-slaps you back to wakefulness if you try. "This thread is 72 years old; are you sure you actually want to stir up this can of worms again?"

I think that's a better idea than simply locking the thread outright...although there will still be people who ignore the alert and re-animate the long-dead thread just so they can say "I agree!".

One say “it is a 10years old thread lol..”
then an other one say “ use the search button, it’s been discussed over and over again…” that doesn’t make any sense, if you use the search button and get onto something that is relevant to you, you should be able to comment/ask questions on that thread imo!
Agree, odds are the search button is how they found the thread!

But then again, as we been seeing since 2.0.. a huge increase in trying to conduct sales outside the EE. Because nobody is reading the rules, or how to access, and just clicking.

So doubt that will deter people. Since alot of it is just I dont care to partake in this forum so ill just necro a dead post.

First, I'd like to suggest this thread be moved to General. I just happened to notice a New Thread title while looking for info and looked out of Curiosity.
Recap issues-
Insert Links instead of Resurrections
FIX Chrono sequence in SEARCH
NEWBIE FAQ should include :
1) "DON'T Post just to say " ME TOO " or " I AGREE "
2) Don't Post on NECRO threads EVER
3) Don't ask questions until AFTER YOU SEARCH

I agree ....... We need more thread police.

I don't go to the Off-Topics forum, thus the location of this thread.

This is no attack on the mods. But most of the mods are the same, that there was 20 years ago, we are not spring chickens anymore.

Maybe it is time to get some younger ones, to deal with this policing stuff. Because as ironically as it is of me saying. I bet many are tired of dealing with stuff or people.

Perhaps we shouldn't forget that there are a whole bunch of newer +/or younger members on the site & what we [may] have seen or discussed ad nauseum in the past, may be a topic that the younger, newer members may only be seeing for the first time & simply want to learn about it or announce that they too are interested in that topic, whereby other members with the same interest might strike up a conversation.

Further, since new members must post in different forums prior to seeking access to the EE, perhaps the only topics they are interested in, or feel comfortable enough to comment on, are the older necro topics.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I still re-read my old issues of Precision Shooting, Handloader and Rifle magazines & it seems every time I re-read an article, I pick-up some new bit of useful information. Now perhaps that is my Old-timer's kicking in, but it may also be that my tastes & areas of interest have changed over the lat~50 years.

Why lock necro threads simply because no one has responded or bumped it in the last ###xx period of time, unless, as the mod pointed out, that it has gone so far off the rails, that the train has become a ship.

Since we are talking about it... another thing I like about necro-threads are seeing posts from contributors who have passed away in the interim, or in some select cases some that have been "offed" by the mods... like Douglas.

Threads go-away quickly. A new thread today will expire in a few days, at most a few weeks, meaning less interest. I believe that human interest peaks when a new thread has been created, then deminishes when it becomes mundane. Personally, I'm not concerned, I'll read new and old threads.
