I have a reinforced closet that I use to store my rifles and ammunition. The door is solid core, with a dead bolt and locking knob. Both have reinforcement plates to prevent the door from splitting should it be kicked in. The door jam also has steel plates to help prevent the door jam from splitting.

My question, I am waiting on my RPAL at the moment but would like to be prepared once it shows up. I am trying to figure out a good way to store pistols in the space. I dont have room to add more shelving, and the shelves in there are full of ammo and other firearms related stuff. I know I am only required to have pistols double locked, door and trigger lock, but I was thinking a clam shell type locking device that fastens to a stud and then around the pistol. I have a design on paper, but before I start construction I thought Id see what other people do.

What does everyone else use?

Ideas would be great.

Thanks

I wonder if what you describe would qualify under this section... "Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely".. That would remove the requirement to triggerlock restricted firearms.

Im not sure, thats why I figure a trigger lock makes it 'safer' if someone were to challenge the storage. In the next 5 years I will be building a room specific to fire arms storage in my basement, concrete walls on 2 sides, double layer plywood walls on the other 2 walls. But in the mean time Id rather be safe then sorry.

They don't need to be locked at all once inside the secure room.

"OR Lock the firearms in a vault, safe or room that was built or modified specifically to store firearms safely."

Besides, your storage will only come into question if you get robbed, at which point you'll get charged with improper storage regardless of how they are stored, and it becomes lawyer time.

I designed something that will mount to the wall and hold 3-4 pistols with trigger locks. Bought the steel today and layed out all the holes. I will do the cutting and drilling in the next few days and do a rough assembly. Once Im happy with it I will de-burr any holes and edges, then clean, spot weld and paint.

Pics to follow as things go.

Here is my gun rack design. I still need to paint it, put the padding on and spot weld the nuts so they dont thread off.

I will take a picture with one of my bb pistols tomorrow after I get some padding on the arms.

This should hold 3-4 pistols with or without trigger locks.
