Looks like the cop took centre of mass shots which would definitely kill the deer, but not instantly so he pumped 3 rounds into it. A headshot would have provided more desirable results. Anyhow he got the job done. But if you guys are bored, read the comments, loads of entertainment and facepalm going on there.

wow is everyone stupid here first off it would take a high claiber weapon to kill the deer with one shot... a shot gun is not and will never be classified as a high caliber gun so i feel bad for this officer who had to do this BUT HE DID WHAT HAD TO BE DONE WITH WHAT THEY HAD. education is everything.

We should all listen to that guy.

Any "bullet" smaller than a 12g should be considered "low caliber" and therefore treated like a 22lr.
 
There was another facebook comment about the proper ammo should have been a slug cause it's more accurate than buckshot. I can't find it anymore, might have been removed or just lost in the maze of comments. Some guy on youtube figured it was no different than shooting someone in the head for pleasure. The ignorance is huge on this topic.
 
Not exactly sure of the reason for the body shots. Even if you are not a hunter, should you not know that a head shot is best in that situation? This same situation happened to me about 20 years ago when we hit a deer going to the cottage. The officer took 4 shots with his pistol at point blank before killing the deer. There were 4 of us in a van and we hit a deer and got off into the ditch enough to slowly roll the van on it's side. Funny thing is we had a trailer loaded with atv's that stayed perfectly level, just slipped off the ball hitch. Anywho, there was one of those old flashlights that blink in the back of the van and it started blinking. One of the older guys thought the van was on fire and was scrambling to get out the passenger winow, so between getting out of the van and keeping him calm I had forgot about the deer. When the opp arrived and made sure we were alright he went over to the deer then we heard the shots. I said if I had known the poor thing was still breathing I would have slit her throat and ended her suffering. The officer said it was best that I dind't in that situation. I didn't ask why.
 
BODY SHOTS TO PREVENT RICHOCHETS. Where do you think a slug would go after it went through its head. Ya, it would be dead, but your in a city with cars and people around.

Hello. If he had used buckshot to the center of the forehead, or even a slug, the pellets, or bullet would have gone no further than the neck. We have shot several cows in this manner and the pellets stop about the base of the skull. We have never found pellets in the neck meat.
 
Buck to the head would have been best. But not someone trained in hunting / bush ways. More then likely he had ricochet on his mind, as police training would focus on the reduction of collateral damage.

I agree, buckshot would be best... probably didnt have any. I dont load any in my shotgun because I am responsible for each projectile that I discharge....
 
Don't shoot in cities and you don't have to worry...be sure of your target, and beyond.

Do you also not shoot bird loads?

When police try to kill people, they aim for center of mass because it's it's the easiest to hit. It's all they know I imagine.

Yes, everyone with half a measure of smarts would have put the deer down quickly and humanely with a head shot.
 
This is nothing. The CO's recently put down a little perfectly healthy Bambi on a Hutterite Colony in Pilot Mound... If that isn't bad enough - we were only allowed one tag this year due to lack of deer...
 
They should have brought a professional hunter/ sniper and air drop in a 3" steel back stop to prevent ricochets and shoot it in the brain with an exploding bullet... but how much taxes you want to pay? People would pick this apart no matter how they handled this. They did what they could with what they had.

In this Nancy province I'm just happy they didn't blow a ton of money by rushing it to an animal hospital or something dumb to keep the precious snowflake children from learning a little about the real world.
 
That was just rude.
I can see a 1st kill shot and 2 follow-ups to be sure , but this is just plain ignorance.
This isn't the first time police had to put down a deer (and should be part of their training)....no lessons learned obviously.
A simple scan on deer anatomy would only take a minute and 1 shot to the heart...
 
Easy to watch and critique. Most here are gun savvy and hunters. When we hunt we don't have SIU, Professional Standards and any number of complaint processes or law suits hovering about.( things can and do go wrong in a hurry) The deer was shot and it is dead. Looks OK to me.

Given the tools at hand and potential that city cops have little hunting experience putting deer down I would say that this was handled not too bad. I got a road kill deer from the OPP one time that had 9 handgun bullet holes in it... Wounded deer are tough and their desire to live is strong. I shot a wounded doe in the skull a foot from my barrel a few years back only to for it to try and get back up again - with the back half of its head missing.

As for the facebook comment in the OP, my first 2 deer ever were shot once with a single 12g slug and both died instantly.
